Render as is showing me at 52.28 gig, 2.28 short of fit to blue ray dual layer disc at 1440×1080-60i.
Is there a ratio of minutes to gigs that I could use to trim my minutes and arrive at the 50 gig max for the disc?

February 15, 2010 at 1:26 amUnless you are creating a data disc you will not get 50GB of video onto it because a Blu-ray disc has overhead for the Blu-ray structure and menus etc. Besides the disc is really only 47.6GB. “50” is just a nice round number for marketing.
What bit-rate are you using to render? HDV is 13GB/hr at a bit-rate of 25,000Mbps. 3.25 hrs should only be about 42.25GB.

I used 1440×1080-60i, 25 mbps template in movie studio.
Render tells me 3.25 hours is 52 gig. Can’t adjust br with studio so may have to pare film down.
How much (timeline time) do you think I would need to pare off to fit dual layer blue ray disc? -

Well… if we do the math based on what you have we can take the 52GB divided by 195 minutes (3.25hrs) and see that the render is consuming 267MB per minute. If you want to fill 45GB of the disc you divide 45GB / 267MB and see that you can fit 168 minutes or 2 hrs 48 minutes. That seems awful short. A standard single sided Blu-ray can hold 2 hrs. I don’t know why Movie Studio is making the file so big. It just doesn’t make sense.
Do you have the option in Movie Studio to create an AVCHD Blu-ray file? (perhaps with the Sony AVC encoder?) This will be much smaller and should yield similar quality.

The only other format option here is a
sony,avc,mp4,m2ts,.avcand there is a blue ray template option then of 1440×1080-60i @15mbps vid stream.
This indicates a 27.41 gig size for the total est size.
Would this work?
Curious, does studio perhaps reflect that the size won’t because it only assumes single layer disc?
Hope I don’t lose all this work, week on end.

Indulge me for a minute, what would be the clarity difference with 15000 vs 25000? Or, would it be negligible as it is blue ray?If I had the pro edition, as you do, could I then adjust the bit rate to fit the disc capacity?
Going from 25000 at 52 gig to 15000 at 27 gig seems like a huge leap.
If I render this 52 gig film to hard drive can I then load it to say a WD passport and play through WD hd media player? Will it play what ever .iso or TS file that is rendered. Maybe this is the way to go with such large projects.

It is not just 25Mbps vs 15Mbps, it’s a completey different codec (MPEG2 vs AVC) which makes all the difference in the world. AVC can compress much better than MPEG2 so it can maintain the same quality at a much lower bit-rate.

Yes, Vegas Pro allows you to change the bit-rate to suite your project. If you render an AVI file from Movie Studio, I believe that DVD Architect Studio will encode the file for you adjusting the bit-rate so that it fits on the disc. This is probably the best route to take with the tools you have.

Yes because MPEG4/AVC is a huge leap in technology over MPEG2.

The WD HD Media Player will not play .iso files but it loves .TS and .m2t, .mts, etc files. I capture all of my cable shows as .TS files and play them on my WD HD Media Player. Making Blu-ray discs makes sense for individual distribution. For home entertainment, I would just use a media player.

I don’t think the hdr-hc9 shoots in the avchd mode.
I picked this up on the thread:”For NTSC HDV use the MPEG-2 Blu-ray 1440×1080-60i, 25 Mbps video stream or Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i, 25 Mbps video stream template depending on your source format.
For AVCHD use the Sony AVC Blu-ray 1920×1080-60i, 16 Mbps video stream template.
will I still be ok with the sony avc if my footage is not avchd?

Yes. What you render to has no bearing on what your camera shoots. I usually like to keep my formats the same but there is nothing stopping you from render to the other format. If I had an HDV shoot that wouldn’t fit on a Blu-ray I would definitely render to AVCHD to make it fit. The quality between 25MBps HDV and 16MBps AVCHD is about the same.

John, will this work as well?
