    Hi, This is almost embarrassing to ask as I am sure it is a simple thing to do.

    I have rendered my animation in Maya and imported it into AE. The AE comp consists of a background and a foreground. The foreground is spinning cards and I want to add motion blur to them without having to render it in 3D.
    side note: I have also added a “Lens Blur” effect to the foreground layer.

    I turned on the motion blur switch on the layer (icon is little circles piled on top of each other.) But I can’t see any obvious motion Blur. The object are spinning fast enough so I should see something.

    Any ideas on how I can see the MB effect or maybe other ways of achieving it ?.

    Have you turned on MB for the comp in addition to for the layer itself? The icon looks the same, but is at the top of the timeline window (versus the individual layer MB that’s with the other switches for each layer).

    You can also raise the shutter angle in the comps settings window “Advanced” tab to increase the amount of MB.

    If you imported the card animation allready animated from maya you´ll never have motion blur from AE because actually nothing is moving. AE is only seeing a file. In order to have the motion blur on something pre-rendered you have to precompose that layer that contains the animation and apply CC Force Motion Blur to it.

    I´m sorry if I got ot wrong but since you said you rendered you animation in maya and imported it to AE I figured that was the issue.

    After re-reading your initial question, Justin, I realized that, although it is accurate regrading how to apply normal motion blur, my answer won’t solve your issue. Adriano, is exactly right in that, since your foreground layer isn’t moving in AE, there is no movement for AE to base motion blur upon. So, your options are to use the Force Motion Blur filter or re-render in your 3D app with motion blur.

    Yeah, the native After Effects motion blur acts on transformations to layers within After Effects, not on motion within the footage item. But there are some ways of getting motion information out of the footage item and using that information to simulate motion blur.

    One option is to use ReelSmart Motion Blur. There’s a link in the “Motion blur” section of After Effects Help.

    You can also hack together a pretty good approximation of motion blur by applying the Timewarp effect, setting Speed to 100, enabling motion blur within the effect, and using the manual shutter control features to adjust the motion blur.

    Hi Dave.
    Yes ideally I would like the blurring to look like it is happening in 3D space. But I don’t want to have to do it in the render and would prefer the interactivity of AE.
    I think there is a way, if I was to render out a special pass from maya.

    Do you know what the special pass might be ? Is it a vertex or normal pass ? and if so how would I use it in AE.

    I have found out how to apply MB to your 3D renders (In my case from Maya) in AE.
    You have to render out a special vextor pass. Then using “ReelSmart Motion Blur” you can use this pass to blur your 3D renders like they would in 3D

    As I recall about 5 years ago I used this vector shader to also map 2D images onto my 3D objects while in AE.
    For example we tracked a persons face in Maya rendered out a vector pass and used the Red and Green channels of vector pass; R&G hold the normal information of the 3D object.
    We could wrap a 2D texture onto the object like a sticker. Much like you would in a 3D package.
