  • How do I make video grainy, like Super 8?

Posted by Dave Fisher on July 15, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Hi, I shot some video. I might be editing in Sony Vegas.

The client wants the footage to “look grainy, like super 8.”

Any tools, effects or recommendations how I do that?

    Many thanks,
    Dave.

I assume that you are looking for a grain which is much more subtile than the filmgrain that is supplied by the Vegas FX Filmgrain? Then I would suggest that you have a look at the CreativeEase GrainPlus2 plugin from Pixelan.

To Get a Really good Super 8MM and 16MM “look” inside of Vegas

    1. Use Curves- create a nice film density
    2. Use Color Corrector to “mute” colors -1950’s, 1960’s look
    3. Add a vignette
    4. Add some very subtle strobe FX
    5. Add some very subtle scratches- very light. Too much looks fake..
    6. Optional mask to create a shallow depth of field- add Gaussian blur

95% of clients we’ve submitted this to loved the “film cameras” we used to shoot the footage on…..
