A client has a powerpoint presentation that needs to be turned into a DVD. A talking head video intro into slide show with voice over.
    Problem…
The only way I see to bring slides into vegas timeline is saving them to
    Jpeg, PNG, Tiff,.
I used PNG as that tends to make Vegas the happiest. (Tried others but no better)Tiff is less compression but failed to yield results
But the underlines are jumping (interlacing) and the text is wormed along the edges. The smaller 16-18 point fonts are almost illegible.
There dark red/Maroon highlighted words are smearing badly.
There was a white drop shadow against black on the text, It was a -horrendeous result.
The pics, photos on the slides look good and crisp. Its only the text.
I have had good results with small text when generated within vegas
    or imported from other sources.

Am I missing another export/save as option in powerpoint that gets better translation to video
Has anyone gotten good results for PPT to a DVD to be played on standard TV’s
    and what did you do?

    What I’ve tried….

-I had them remove the drop shadow. (better edges but still worming)
-I increased the font size as much as possible.
    -tried different background/txt color combinations
-made sure there isnt any bright whites behind txt
-tested “reduce flicker” switch on events. (no change)
-tested “interlace lower field” on events (no change)
-slides were resized to 720×480 to reduce over-rez, fit 1-1 (no change)
-rendering and playing off the tape to TV(same result)
-burned test DVD (just as bad)

Its just not crisp an pro ! Argh !!!*^)*&^

    Vegas 6d
    Intel P4
    1gig ram
previewing via firewire to sony video moniter via “s” cable and also to a standard TV via Composite cable for “real” results

PS:Client is doing all the powerpoint work and is limited with his skills
    Thanks in advance

    1. Save the PPT slides as PNG’s (in PowerPoint)
    2. Use a black background and crop all of your PPT PNGs on the timeline
    3. You might need to do a slight blur on some PPT PNG’s in your timeline
    4. De-interlace your png’s
    5. I’ve done about a 100 of these and for some fairly large fortune 500 companies.

    6. You have a lot more control if you edit your PPT slides before you save them as PNG’s

    7. I’ve found this to be a stronger solution than Camtesia….

I have a customer that makes power point presentations they need voice overs for, and want to present them on Video CD-R’s and DVD’s. I have really struggeled with this issue in the past, and I know what you are experiencing. The problem with my customer is that their PPP’s are really anal retentive with “just the right” colors, backgrounds, etc. etc. In other words, they spend a LONG time making them and want a Video CD-R and DVD to look JUST like their PPP’s. The bottom line was that in order to make them look decent playing on a TV, I’ve ended up completely re-building them in Vegas using the Vegas titler. It has taken a fair amount of time to do, but I’ve got them to look pretty good. One trick to making the titles crisper and clearer is to double the frame size, i.e. if 720X480, change it to 1,440X960. A lot more work, but they look good. I just couldn’t find any way to make a PPP look decent any other way.

At what point (and how) in your workflow do you adjust for the difference in computer RGB and video RGB?

    Questions…
1-They already have a background of their choice so where does the black one you mention come into play.

You say “De-interlace”. If they are PNG’s…Arent they already deinterlaced or progressive static images. When I select properties they are already in progressive mode.
I believe for CRT distribution they will end up being interlaced lower field first anyways so you dont get progressive stutter.
Please clarify your process for I am interested in your methods/results.
    Thanks

PS: any advantage with a TIF ?

We will do the following for a client:

    1. Work with the client and record a master audio track to edit..
    2. Edit PPT in PowerPoint and convert to PNG’s (Tiff’s are ok but BIGGER)

    3. Use Vegas and Sound Forge tools to edit audio track- then lay PNG’s over audio. (Sometimes(75% of the time) we go to the customer lecture site and use native lecture audio, but really attempt to control the audio using our own audio equipment) We’ll video the speaker and edit this video over the PNG/powerpoint slides- This is where we will use the “Black” on one track and size the PNG so the slide is readible- I’ve only had one client that insisted on Camtesia due to the amount of Powerpoint transitions within a slide (up to 20). In my opinion this was way to busy for a TV lecture. –

    4. We then edit and deliver a fairly clean file that the client can distribute. Of course we discuss what end result they want in advance.

    I hope this helps!

So… video RGB at output via video output fx>Sony broadcast colors>Conservative 7.5 setup?

    understood-
Yes the talking head video is only at the beginning and end.
Other than that it is only the slide that is on the track/screen.
VO is recorded here in the studio as they do a pseudo presentation from another PPT computer.

So Guess thats what I’m doing now already right. But still not really crisp. Hmmm
