  • DVDA 3: Is a 2hr DVD possible?

When I upgraded to DVD Architect 3.0 I noticed that projects I had created with DVD Architect 1.0, no longer fit on a 4.7 GB DVD when I opened them with DVD Architect 3.0. I also noticed that I cannot create a DVD that holds 2 hours of video becuase it too does not fit on a 4.7 GB DVD. I was wondering if there was a way of getting around this issue.

I understand that there are more options in DVD Architect 3.0 and that is probably why the video takes up more space on the disk, but is there anyway of getting two hours of MPEG video onto a 4.7 GB DVD using DVDA 3.0?

    Thanks,

    Michael M.

One way is to input avi to DVDA and use File > Optimize to let DVDA calculate the bitrate necessary to fit onto disc – this also take account of menus. You can do the same with MPEG2 but this will mean double compression and probable quality hit.

Disadvantage of this way is that no 2 pass VBR available, whereas if you know what bitrate will do the job, Vegas may produce better quality by conseving resources for where there is more motion in frame.

(Don’t know why DVDA3 project takes up more room than DVDA1, but as you say, lots of nice additional features.)

Okay, thanks. Its unfortunate that in order for Sony to add additional features it comprimises the amount that can fit in the project. Maybe they will fix this in the future. I will just create more than one DVD. I think that decreasing the bit-rate will worsen the quality of the DVD, so I don’t really want to go that route. If this is not true, please tell me. Thanks for the help,

Theoretically yes, lowering the bitrate may reduce quality, but this is likely to be undetectable, especially if 2 pass VBR is used.

Another thing to look at is do you really need that 2 hours – I don’t know what sort of project it is, but maybe a little pruning could make it more watchable 😉

    – and, with the advent of 2 layer DVDs this problem will no longer exist.

They haven’t compromised anything. I’m still rendering at the same bitrates I used for projects in DVDA1, 2, and 3. I guess if the project was really close, DVDA3 may make something just a fraction larger that might put it over – can’t rule out the possibility. However, where are you seeing this size differenc? After preparing the DVD and checking the size of the folder it creates? The estimated size reported by the project?

If you’re looking at the estimated size, it’s frequently incorrect (often over-estimates). Instead try preparing the disc and seeing how large the resultant folder actually is.

I found the very same thing going from DVDA-1 to DVDA-2. I got 2h 15m on a DVDA-1 DVD but not on a DVDA-2. I know some of the reasons. One reason was that DVDA-1 did not put a counter on the DVD. You know that counter showing time and chapter numbers you see on the fron of the DVD player? DVDA-2 start3ed that automatically. Plus some other items I never figured out made the project larger in DVDA-2 than 1.

As mentioned in the first reply, I was also told here in the Cow Forum that anything over about 1h 15m bring the AVI file into DVDA-x and click the “fit-to-disc” option and let DVDA-2 figure it out. I did and my last DVD came out great, but was only about 1’45”.

I suggest you try doing the same on a long video and see how it comes out.

I made a mistake in my first post becuase I realize now you can’t even make a two hour DVD (without changing the bit-rate) in DVD Architect 1.0. However, it still is true that DVDA3 makes the files bigger. I am trying out all of the suggestions. Again, thanks for the help.
