    Hello Everyone!

I have been lurking around the forums for a while now, and have learned quite a bit from previous posts, which I thank you all for! I am relatively new to After Effects and I have a question regarding 3D text.

I have done the tutorial from videocopilot.net to make a “rotating earth” (https://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/the_blue_planet/) I would now like to make some curved 3D text, then have this text start from behind the earth, and rotate around the earth once, then on the 2nd time around, stop in front of the earth where it will finally stop. What is the best way to accomplish this? Use a plugin like Zaxwerks ProAnimator or Invigorator 3D? My biggest trip up so far has been getting the text to appear as if it is coming from behind the earth. I can get it to be 3D and rotate, but it all happens in front of the earth.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there Brian.

Do you want the text to have depth? Or just rotate around like this:

If it is just that you can use the 3D text preset called 3D rotate around circle. Then precomp the earth layer so it can be 3D and interact with the 3D text. After that you can also create a light on the scene and cast shadows from the text over the planet.

If you want the text to be extruded than I´m trying to find that out around here. Zax can probably do it.

    Hope I helped.

    (sorry about the poor video!)

    Cheers.

I would prefer that the text rotating around the globe would have depth to it and look 3D, however after looking at what you have posted, that could work as well.

    Thanks!

    You´re most welcome.

Well I´m trying here to combine some of the tecniques from Aharon and Maltaannon to make estruded text with this preset I mentioned.

    I also remembered this:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/langley_david/3d_ribbon_text.php

Wich maybe adjusted to use an image instead of text. But thats just a guess. I haven´t tried it yet.

Well I´m happy I was of some help.

    Again Cheers!

I got my text to rotate around my earth just fine (well, except the text itself doesn’t have depth). It’s interesting you mentioned a logo, because I also have a logo I made in Illustrator, and I can make 3D in Zaxwerks, and I would also like the logo to fly out from behind the earth and stop in front, with the logo having depth (3D).

    Any thoughts?

I don´t know much about zaxwerks but I guess the logo would be an easy task if it does not have to bend in space. You make it look 3D and then put it´s anchor point in the middle of the comp and rotate. (might work)

What do you think about this for the text:

It´s pretty easy…just requires some expressions (simple ones) and a few steps. Tell me if you fancy that and I´ll describe them for you.

    Ok……..keep going.

That is exactly what I am looking for. I would be very interested in knowing how to do it if you don’t mind!

Well I´ve made a little video here. Trying to explain my steps.

I think it´s all there but if I missed anything please ask me.

My mic is really cheap so I apologise for that. Also my english might be a bit rusty for I don´t really speak to anyone in english in a while.

I hope it helps you for real so I can start giving back to people everything I got from the cow (and being a vegetarian it´s great to know she´s still alive).

    Well there you go:

(oh! one more thing I did was to go on to the material options (pressing AA) of the master text (after making it 3D and after duplicateing it) and changing it´s shininess from 5% to 50% and also disableing cast shadows on the slave before duplicateing it)

Well let me know what came of it.

    All the best.

    Cheers.

    ninguem.

Thanks for the video it worked great. I got everything done earlier, it was so easy after you explained it. I just need to adjust the lighting on the text. I think I will leave the logo the way it is, unless you have some suggestions. I do have one more question. When the text comes out from behind the earth, and goes behind it, it disappears way too early. Is there a way to change that without changing the size of the radius?

I am a Realtor, and this clip will go at the end of all of my new home video tours for promotion. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again!

I´m really glad you liked it mate.

I don´t really know what´s going on with your text. It really should go all the way like the Bulls in the 90’s……..

How did you get it to go around? Is it 3D?

How about the earth….is it precomped and 3D to?

It´s really hard to guess without seeing the project…….but it really seems strange.

Let´s get the best out of what we got…………

    Cheers.
