Struggle in my mind about vegas..
Posted by Stylz on April 23, 2005 at 10:03 amI use P.Pro 1.5. I recently tryed a comrades vegas 5. I figured if I posted this in the P.Pro forum I might not get an honest awnser. I actually liked the color correction in vegas more so than pro. I actually like some of the features in vegas over pro as well(the UI not being one of them). My question is for people who have used both programs. Whats the benifits of vegas compared to P.Pro? Why choose vegas? Get as detailed as you like. I am honestly thinking of taking the time to learn vegas. I just need some reasons. I feel like there is this underrated gem begging for my attention, and want to know if I should awnser the call.
Thanks in advance.

April 23, 2005 at 1:42 pmThere are many things. Like many others, I’m an ex Premiere user, now completely a Vegas user. It’s very rare to find editors who have gone from Vegas to Premiere!
As a general comparison, Vegas is extremely fluid. By that I mean you can, say, set up a looped portion of the timeline and this will continue to play over and over while you change any properties, and you can see or hear the result of your changes as you “twiddle”, whether it’s colour correction, applying an effect, making the picture a different size or position in the frame, adding reverb or another effect to audio, superimposing a title, etc etc.
In other NLEs I’ve worked with, as soon as you go to change a setting, playback stops.
Another thing is that the controls for most of the functions you need are right there on the basic window, rather than accessed through a maze of menus.
Ther are heaps of other things, such as Vegas legendary stability, or the audio tools, generally accepted as the best of any NLE, or the built-in compositing tools.
Best way is to download the free demo and play.

April 23, 2005 at 1:55 pmI used to use Premiere 5.1 up to version 6.0 before I abandoned that ship. I’ve messed around a little bit with PPro too. Originally got Vegas for it’s audio mixing abilities but gradually used it more and more for video. One of the things I like about it is how easy it is to navigate from one place to another in a project. Using a wheel mouse with one flick of your finger you can go from viewing your project in it’s entirety to a single frame view. You can resize your track height by grabbing and dragging the edges.Audio waveforms are drawn very quickly and accurately making syncing 2 and 3 camera shoots a breeze (get ready for a sales pitch to follow). You can make editing changes while you are playing the timeline and it won’t stop! Make a selection and loop it while making audio filter changes as it’s playing in realtime. The interface is customizable-I use dual monitors and my right monitor is my preview window and audio meters left side it timeline. Overall the workflow is just a lot more efficient than Premiere.

April 23, 2005 at 2:36 pmI haven’t used PP. I have used other packages.
Vegas is just so responsive to my ideas.
If it is FAST edit decision and URGENT creation pathways I’ve found Vegas a pure joy to use! I really mean this! I’m doing stuff on the fly ALL THE time. I can try out say 20 different things in about 4 minutes . . . I can have my client sitting over my shoulder – this doesn’t happen too much! – and I can experiment AND they stay enthralled at what they can see emerge.
I akin/liken Vegas to a smart graphics package – and YES I do sometimes use my Graph Tablet to “draw” my way round the GUI. I can grab events and lasso events with my Graph Pen . . . I’m trying to put over to you that this package is just too easy to use and allows for many ,many creative decisions VERY fast . . . .
The use of Loop Editing has got to be seen to be believed! Peter is totally correct. PLUS the Trimmer . .. ah man there is too much . . .The trimmer lets me Scrub the bits I want, save as a subclip and then “sprinkle” these where on the T/L I want. I’m doing L&J editing at times I don’t even have time to think – they just happen now. AND this is the point. I’m getting real close to “Real-Time” editing . .. forget about real time Preview and render times. I want to have an NLE that allows for me to get closer to that Nirvana of real Time editing – editing as if the video IS happening – yeah? Can Premmie do this?
Bottom line here is that this is ALL reflected in the output,. I DON’T mean time to edit BUT the way a piece actually looks – it looks fluid. THAT’S what I want.
Best regards – get Vegas – whatever version – it is gonna change your life – FOREVER!
( okay Pete? yah think he’s convinced now? )
Best regards,
Grazie

April 23, 2005 at 6:35 pmI switched from Premiere 6 to Vegas a couple of years ago.
The three biggest advantages I found Vegas to have over Premiere are 1) Stability, 2) Stability,
3)Stability!In two years of heavy use, Vegas has crashed on me less than ten times, and most of those occurred as a result of using an indpendent effects plug-in. When I was using Premiere, I expected it to crash at least once a day.

April 24, 2005 at 9:42 amLet us know how you go STYLZ, and don’t forget to ask any questions – one BIG plus for Vegas we forgot to mention is the Vegas community, here or at several other forums.

April 24, 2005 at 11:06 amI second that.
Peter has very genourously tested my DVDA file by burning to a DVD-RW and his expert opinion is that DVDA3 anti flicker filter is a good thing.
Thank you Peter.Regards

April 25, 2005 at 12:58 amHello STYLZ,
I can’t help you there beause I started out using Vegas 4 plus DVD Authoring with Architect 2. It’s not hard because I have all my tutorials by my side. I went to NAB and I like what I see in Vegas 6 plus Architect 3. I read all the forums and learn from everyone elses mistakes. They all converted over to Vegas. It’s HOT and it Rocks, if you know what I mean.
Good Luck!

April 25, 2005 at 2:09 amI use Vegas for all my video editing… but I do prefer Encore over Architect for DVD authoring. It is a good program… if you can get over the blank interface.
Vegas is by far the best NLE. I use Premiere Pro 1.5 at work… it can’t touch Vegas 4,5 or 6.
