I tried cloning a row going on the z axis copying that clone and offsetting it. Then putting both clones into another clone and cloning those along the x axis. This all worked as I thought it would but now I wanted to put a random on this but seeing as I have two clones inside of the clone I’m randomizing its just randomizing rows of the clones instead of each individual hexagon. Im not sure how I would make this grid of hexagons all in one clone?

My other though was to make a bunch of Hexagon splines and put it on a flat surface, extrude them and then fracture it but for some reason I’m running into problems.

what would be the simplest way to make this? Here is what I want the final result to look like.

Ok I couldn’t figure this out cloning it so i used fracture and it worked now I need to effect the falloff area to the shape of a cloud. I put a shader effect on it but when I try to put a custom image it doesn’t work. Here it is with a linear gradient.

here is how i want to project the shader on the top of the fracture

If you have R18 you can use a Cloner with the Honeycomb Array to create your grid of hexagons.

With a previous version you can use a Cloner in Grid Array mode with your hexagon and a null as children to create an alternating pattern. Use the Mode>Per-Step (above “Size”) to add clones:

    Thanks Jim

Looking at the file I’m not sure I totally understand this but with this or the fracture file I made I still need to know how to make a custom area for the random to effect. I assume with the shader. Linear gradient is working but when I load my own greyscale image in it isn’t working at all.

    Are you using R18?

Ok I know what i was doing wrong now. I was trying to go into the shader >custom shader >load image. Instead I changed the shader to “color” then made a new material, loaded image into color channel and put the material on the shader, made the texture flat mapping and sized the map.

Im wondering can I load a quicktime movie into the color channel, or a sequence of images?

    No R16 unfortunately.

You should be able to load a movie wherever you can load an image. Give it a shot.

Here’s my version using a cloner and two Shaders – one with the image and the other with noise.

I’m not sure I helped much, but I’m glad you got it figured out.
