I have a model, and I noticed after I bought it, that it’s not in C4D format. It’s a max file for 3DS max.
    This model is a robot.
I have the intention of adding bones in C4D, however I am fairly new to C4D and 3d in general.

Main Question: The foot of this robot has hydraulics which move with the foot, kind of like a suspension system. Two cylinders, and one slides into the other cylinder. What is the best way to get the hydraulics to work like that, and have them attached to the foot so they move accordingly, but not passed a certain point of the joints.
Can this all be done just with bones?

    Thanks

You don’t need bones for mechanical rigs like robots because the parts are rigid and act like bones themselves. You can apply IK and expression tags to the parts as if they were bones.

I suggest you watch Cactus Dan’s excellent tutorial on mechanical rigging here: https://www.c4dportal.com/cactusdan/Mechanical.zip

I think you’ll have to register at C4D Portal to get it, but it’s worth it.

Dan uses his own rigging plugins but the same principles can be applied using Cinema’s native tools (IK and Constraint tags).
