    I found an answer to another C4D question on this forum (thanks Adam), so let’s give this one a try too.

    I’m working on instruction videos for the building industry.
    Everything that moves in reality, I try to simulate by keyframing it in C4D.
    For showing some details (in this case inside a concrete wall), I use a Boole to make a temporary cut-out.
    As this cutout will not happen in reality, I don’t want to animate the cut-out object in en out by scaling or moving it (in fact I tried, but I’m not satisfied about it).
    I’d prefer to do it with a fade-in/out. Is there a way to do that within C4D.
    The method of keyframing the transparency of a copy of the cut-out material (a method pointed out in an earlier post on this forum) is too complex, because of the complexity of the objects (+ subobjects).

    Besides that, I would like to combine the movement of the Boole in combination with fading it in and out for a particular architectural animation.
    A cut-out that moves with the camera and in the meantime fades in and out.

    This would be difficult in post also.

    The boole it self you cannot really do much about but you can fake it.
    You need two walls one with a hole and one with out.
    The solid wall needs a DISPLAY TAG. Enable and animate “visibility”

    Then you should be good to go.

    another possibility is to use the Proximal channel shader in the alpha channel of whatever you want to make disappear. It can be faded and you can move whatever object the Proximal is set to watch. Shape is the problem, by default it uses the origin of the watched object and the result is spherical regardless of the shape of the object. You can use the edges, points and polys as well though (if the object is editable) and with enough points all the little spheres around the points merge into straight lines.
    Here’s a simple example with two objects being ‘cut’ with a proximal “boole”. Each object has it’s own material but each material uses an Alpha channel with Proximal in it, both Proximals are set to use the StackedPlanes object. The reason for the stacked planes is obvious if you set the Proximals to look for the Cube.1 object…

    I put together a scene file using Xpresso instead of Lennart’s coffee tag (Rui posted something similar but the file is no longer available) and changing the gradient to one with a little fade. Unfortunately fading the gradient messes up the cap solution a little. It might be possible to improve the result by using a cube with some fog or some such instead of the checkered plane.

    I’ve been a few days ooo; in the meantime, a lot of intriguing answers to my (I thought) simple question.
    I will study everything; for now they’re all far above my level (as a C4D beginner).
    For my project I’ll stick to the more obvious solutions (fading duplicate objects), but thanks anyway for your contributions.
