  • Extruded nurb does something weird to my illustrator text

Posted by Lee Maloney on March 3, 2010 at 12:49 am

After racking my brain for days I had to come to creative cow for help. Here’s the scope, I made this text file in illustrator, I altered a letter in illustrator by erasing part of the letter and adding some things. When I bring this text into cinema 4d everything’s okay. When I hit the extrude nurb, everything’s okay, however when I add the fillet cap to give it the desired effect, things go haywire and it adds extra 3d pieces that cover my text out of nowhere, Im lost I tried adjusting the illustrator file, but thats not the issue because when I switch the rounding to fillet, everything is fine. It’s only 2 out of the 6 letters I am turning to 3d, I don’t understand where extra chunks of 3d material is coming from. Any ideas is greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thank you in advance.

Can you post the problem file, or a pic of the problem?

My first guess would be something you did when adjusting the text in Illustrator. Did you happen to look at the text in outline view in Illustrator. That way you can make sure you’ve deleted any unnecessary points that may not be visible in the standard view. Just a guess, hope it helps..

First off guys thanx for responding. Secondly yes adam I can upload a picture of the 2 files, whats the image uploader that people normally use around here so I can upload the pictures. Jeremy, this was my first time really using illustartor and cinema 4d, however i know when im visibly looking at the picture as well as when i look @ the image in cinema 4d it looks perfect, if even looks perfect when I add the extrude nurb and set the rounding to just fillet, however when i set the rounding to fillet cap, which has my desired effect things go crazy, The junk material even moves around the letter when I switch some of the settings, so I know the real text i want is under that junk. Ill take your suggestion and look at the outline again in illustrator however idk what it could be. I’ll check your suggestion and check the outline Jeremy in the meantime ill try and upload some pics

To upload a picture: when you respond to a post, click the little camera icon (third from right). You can then upload the pic and it will give you an embed code. Paste that code back into your reply and the picture will show up when you post.

The reason i said check the outline in Illustrator is because you said you were “erasing” stuff and adding other stuff. So if you’re not really familiar with Illustrator, there may have been extra points added in the process that you can’t see in the normal view. Like I said before, I was just guessing, so that may not be the problem.

Something else to think about: when you first import the illustrator artwork, does the spline look ok in the viewport? Also, does the artwork show up as one spline in the object manager or several? Sometimes you have to connect splines from Illustrator artwork to get it to work right..

Checked the outline in illustrator, and it looks exactly like the outline when its imported in cinema 4d no problems, also when its imported its several splines in the object manager, however only two of the splines have this problem, ill try connecting them however

Okay I just connected the splines to one spline and the material is still showing, any other ideas

hmmm… sounds like a good time to post some screenshots or the file itself. Its hard to give much more advice without knowing exactly what is goin on. Glad to help if I can though.

here is the file out of illustrator as you could see no added junk, the red outlines are interpreted as material in Cinema 4d, while the black is supposed to be interpreted as open space. as evidenced by the letters below:

here is the file how i’d like it to be, and this is when i choose the fillet:

here is the file when I choose cap, as you can see its extra material on the l, the c, and the y

pretty much the same result, this is how I would like the initial 3d text to look ideally here is the file when I choose fillet cap, as you can see its extra material on the l, the c, and the y.

I would like all the letters to kind of look like the g, the e and a are good, other than they have material in the letter that shouldn’t be there however it is fine, the c has that little piece, and the y and l have pretty noticeable added pieces of material, as well the y has some space that should be empty. Again thanks guys.

From looking at your pics, I have to think there is something wrong with the splines. Maybe they are not closed properly or something. C4D doesn’t just add extra geometry arbitrarily, so the problem has to be in the splines somewhere. Can you post the illustrator file and I’ll take a quick look and then try to extrude it myself.
