  AE, FCP, & compression (for HD 15-min short animated film)

  hi everyone… here’s the situation:

  a short film, 150 shots (total of 15 minutes) of 1080 X 1920 of AE (CS3) sessions (shots are made of HD footage, animation, motion graphics) on Win XP (3.4GHz processor & 2GB of RAM)… editing machine is Mac (2X2.66GHz processor with 4GB of RAM) using FCP 5.1.4 with 500GB external HD…

  how can i edit a full resolution renders of these shots as the Mac can’t handle the load?? where is the best place to apply compression???

  i need the highest quality as the short film is aimed for submitting to film festivals…

  any ideas are much appreciated…

  What do you mean the Mac can’t handle the load? We regularly edit 1920×1080 HD material in Final Cut Pro. You may need to change your sequence settings to match the AE renders, otherwise you will constantly be forced to render in FCP to conform the footage to the sequence settings.

  I wouldn’t compress anything until the very end when you need to create the deliverable (and if you’re delivering on a hard drive, don’t even compress it then!). You may need to find out exactly what the film festivals will require.

  i failed to mention that the ONLY uncompressed 1080X1920 full res render i can get from AE current settings is 9.2GB a minute… in AE, all shots have 10 to 50 photoshop layers, some HD video footage, & some have light effects…

  Sorry, but you’re not telling us what the problem is.

  Is the computer crashing? When?
  Are you running out of hard drive space?
  Is rendering too slow and you’ll miss the deadline?

  i should’ve been a bit clearer…

  with files of this size (9GB/min), i can’t view them on QT (it stops, becomes jittery, or it crashes, even on the MAc with the aforementioned specs)… it takes a very long time to do ANYTHING with them in FCP… & yes, the Mac computer crashes occasionally..
