    Hi All,

Happy Holidays! Here’s the story: I have always cut everything 60i, but was just given a project with footage that a client does know if it was recorded 23.98 or 24p. There will be no 60i, all 23.98 or 24p, 16 x 9. Is there a way I can determine at what rate it was recorded (client doesn’t know who shot it)? Does it matter, or will FCP see 23.98 and make it 24? Secondly, since I’ve never set-up a 24p anamorphic project before, is there any advice or a suggested link you put me to that would walk me through it?

Many thanks, and have an awesome New Year!

    Hi …

Did your client give you tape or Quicktime files?

    Best Regards

    Hi Rob,
I’m a PAL-lander, so I may be wrong, but, if I’m not wrong, in video there is no real p24, but p23,98.
If you go to the A/V Preferences and you have a look in any of the p24 Capture or Sequence presets, in the Summary, you can see that the real Time-base is 23,98 fps.
On some presets, you may find 59,94 fps (should be read FIELDS per second). Those are called PSF (Progressive Segmented Frames), in the end of the day they are p23,98 too.

There are a few high end cameras, really high end that do true 24p (Like the RED) so it is pretty safe to save that the files are 23.98.

But you can retime true 24 to 23.98 with Compressor (and I’m pretty sure CinemaTools) with no quality loss.

Mini DV tapes, Frank. LOTS of them.

    Hi Rafael,

Many thanks. You are absolutely correct. My mistake. It must be 23.98. I’ll just set my prefefences in capture and playback accordingly.

    I appreciate your quick response!

I agree with Michael…you’re looking at 23.98. What’s your typical capture workflow? I’m thinking you’ll probably want to capture using a HDV 1080p24 – firewire easy setup. Drop one clip into the time line FCP will ask you if you want the sequence settings to match the clip settings, say ‘yes’. Then take a look at your sequence setting.. you’ll probably see 23.98.

Does that sound about right Michael?

    Best Holiday Regards!
