  • View Quality in Final Cut Pro 6.06 (looks reduced and choppy):

Posted by Simen Myrberget on October 29, 2010 at 9:32 am

I am working on a music video and trying the Prores 422 codec for the first time. When I view the clips from the viewer in Final Cut pro I can insert in and outpoints as normal and watch the clips on my external monitor in full quality and that is all good (full quality and full screen 1080P).

But when I drag the clip into the timeline it becomes green. When I view the film on my external monitor now the resolution drops a bit and the quality looks coarse. Then I render it, but the same result occur (bad qality during viewing og the external monitor). I have managed good preview quality before (working with full quality, although that was from another camera and with a different codec, but still 1080P). I am using a laptop / Macbook Pro, 2.5 GHZ intel with 4GB of ram and an esata external drives + additinal FW 800 drives externally.

I still have much to learn ….. 🙂

The timeline settings are Safe render and view quality = high, but I think there was an error when I dragged the first clip into the project as the clip settings probably was not received properly.

[Simen Myrberget] “But when I drag the clip into the timeline it becomes green. “

This means your video and sequence settings do not match but your system is able to play them back in Preview Mode, which means it drops quality and frames as needed. You need to fix you settings or else you have to render to see full res put to your monitor.

Easiest way to match the clips and sequence (FCP 6 0r 7) you drop a clip onto an easy timeline and choose yes when it ask you if you want to change the settings to match the clip.

What are you using to connect the external monitor?

    Thanks. This solves it.
My external monitor is connected with DVI directly from the Mac.
