sony handycam to DVD problems
hi guys
first off this is my first plunge into the (scary) world of video.. and have already hit a snag.
im using a sony handycam HDR-CX 150 and using final cut pro 7 on a macbook pro..
the problem is that i shot the footage i needed on the ‘SD HQ’ on the camera without realizing, but i can use it to burn to DVD. but when i import it into FCP it looks great in the canvas but as soon as i burn or even just compress to DVD BEST 90 mins the video is 100 times worse..
i was told that it is maybe my ‘easy setup’ settings that they are not configured right.. i cant re-shoot the footage so i have to try and do my best the get it looking good as possible.. heres some of the details of the file im working with:container: Mpeg Program Stream

interlacing: interlaced – top field firsti feel i should mention it was shot in landscape and i will need to rotate to portrait. i just basically need the best way to maximise the footage i have plus with the addition of a small AC3 file which is no problem BTW.. ( one thing i can do ;)! )
Any Help is greatly appreciated as neither compressor or DVD studio Pro could resolve the problem

there is no such thing as portrait in video, video is always shoot in landscape.
What is the run time of the video?
Are you actually editing this movie or trying to get the entire clip on a DVD? If editing you want to convert it to an edit friendly codec like ProRes. Then edit and export a self-contained movie for the timeline with current settings which should match the new clip.
Take this edited clip (or the original unedited clip) into compressor and make the m2v and ac3 files.
Then use compressor
Try using CBR set to 6Mbps. make sure you keep the field order the same, above states it as upper. And make sure you keep it as PAL 16:9.this should give you as good as you can get.

well im only doing very basic editing to the clip in FCP, like slowing down the clip at certain points, the clip in its original state is only 3 mins.. im wondering should i just have it set the pro res in the easy setup anyway if im not doing much editing or will it affect quality. its just all a little confusing! 🙂

Convert the clip to ProRes before you bring it into FCP, do your speed change. Even better do the speed change in Motion (still want to work with a ProRes version of the clip) it will do a better job. Export this changed clip and bring the new movie into Compressor.
From the m2v, use CBR for sure and set it at 7.5Mbps.
This should give you the best chance at quality.
