  • Working Between Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express 4.0

Posted by Joseph Simon on October 25, 2009 at 10:38 pm

I have Final Cut Express 4.0 installed on my MAC, but the editing lab at my university is equipped with Final Cut Pro (also 4.0, I believe). Is it possible to use projects created in Final Cut Pro with Final Cut Express? I know that certain features are unavailable in Express (though I’m not sure which ones, exactly) and I was just wondering whether any major issues might come up if I tried to do editing work on the same project using the different programs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Actually.. there is a workaround (not ideal).

Export a level 3 XML file.
    Change extension to .fce
Drag on Final Cut Express icon on Dock… you may need to experiment with Option key to force it.
Click through the resulting XML import dialog box that comes up

I’ve done this with 3.5… have not played with 4.0

I don’t think it will work in v4. This version has an import XML function, but I believe it will only accept XML files from iMovie now. It may also be dependent on the FCP content.

    All the best,
