  • Best hard drive to work with ProRes422?

Posted by Chaz Shukat on October 11, 2008 at 3:19 am

Will a 7200rpm 480mbps USB drive work well with ProRes422 project? Is it fast enough? Do I need an ethernet drive that xfrers at up to 1000mbps?

Also, how much drive space might I need to work with 20 hours or so of material converted from PAL HDV 25P 1080i to ProRes422?

    Thanks.

USB drives and ethernet drives do not have the sustained throughput necessary for editng, especially ProRes, without dropping frames. Firewire 400 is minimal, firewire 800 is good, a single SATA is real good, and stripped SATA raid is even better.

Get yourself the free Videospace widget from http://www.Digitalheaven.com and you’ll never have to ask anyone about how much drive space is taken up by a certain codec again. Just select the Quicktime codec you want to know about in the dropdown menu in Videospace, type in the running time, and presto, it calculates the hard drive space for you.

I know the internet has been here for a while David, but did you really post that link on the COW on Dec 31, 1969? I think you beat Tim Berners-Lee by 20 years or so!!! 🙂

Wow, that is weird Simon. I think that counts as a Creative Cow system flashback. Must be way too many magic mushrooms growing in the pasture.

In any case, the proper link to the VideoSpace widget is now https://www.digital-heaven.co.uk/videospace/.
