  DSLR video: color correction + exporting for web and for SD PAL DVD

  Hello everyone!

  I’m new to the DSLR workflow. Sorry for the long post.

  I usually shot on my Canon 5D mark II (1920 x 1080 – 25fps – PAL) and transcoded to prores 422 to edit with FCP7 using Shane Ross workflow. https://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1

  Now I have some questions:

  1) What do you suggest to use for the color correction of my videos? After effects or FCP? When I shoot, I use Technicolor Cinestyle or Canon Neutral with minimal sharpness and contrast.

  2)How do you prepare your videos for Vimeo? Do you use FCP or Compressor? Vimeo suggests to do that if you’re using Final Cut Pro 7 to edit your video https://vimeo.com/help/faq/uploading-to-vimeo/compression-tutorials#final-cut-pro-7 or https://vimeo.com/help/faq/uploading-to-vimeo/compression-tutorials#compressor-35 if you use compressor version 3.5 like me. Do you have any observations or comments?

  3)How do you prepare your videos for an SD PAL DVD? What are the best presets for Compressor in order to get the highest quality videos results from FCP? I normally have videos between 10-20 minutes of duration and videos about 1 hour duration.

  You would probably be better to grade in Color which round trips from FCP7 or da Vinci Resolve. Both output broadcast legal. Resolve is a more powerful system but a steeper learning curve.Resolve Lite is free and unless you want to use the denoising or go 3D it is fully featured. Resolve can handles LUTs like the Technicolor. I also shoot with a 5Dmk2 using Phil Blooms recommended flattened contrast and grade in Resolve. It is easy to use curves and saturation to correct without needing a specific LUT.

  Once you have graded make a master file and in Compressor you can make any of those deliverables. There are better encoding software choices if you have Adobe CC (or CS6).

  Sorry for the second post! Where can I found the Phil Blooms recommended flattened contrast and grade in Resolve? Thanks! 🙂
