Hey all, I’m having a little problem, which could turn into a huge problem for someone else so thought i’d address it now.

Has anyone else had trouble with having your gamma completely screwed up upon output of DVCProHD1080p30 material? We shot a feature with the Panasonic HPX500 which shoots DVCProHD1080p30, when capturing it pulls it back to p24 (this I’m thinking is what is causing the issues) wherein you edit at 23.98.

Everything is fine until we locked picture and used AE to do the compositing work (couple of blue screen shots w/ tracking, tape/boom removal; no big deal). Everything coming from FCP was fine & looked fine in AE. But after outputting the final composite the gamma on these shots are thru the roof. Our easy fix is to just bring the gamma levels back in Color before primary balancing; however i’ve never had this kind of problem with any other codec and was wondering if anyone else has experienced/solved this.

    Thx,
    ~Thom

If you shot the footage at 30P, you should have had your timeline set to 29.97. Had you done that the system would not be trying to make 24 frame video out of 30 frames.

Best to go back and change this as it will continue to be a problem for one stage or another forward.

    Hope this helps,

That’s how it’s supposed to come into the system, it was shot 30p but the system automaticlly brings it in @ 23.98 b/c it has to be finished as HD material going out @ 23.98. Talked to Panasonic Tech, that’s how this codec’s workflow is supposed to be done.

That’s not my problem either, I was wondering about color profiles in AE not my frame rate in FCP.

Someone in Tech support did not understand what you were doing. DVCPRO HD edits in 59.94, 29.97 and 23.98, dependent on the capture. As far as the color it is always 4:2:2 in every format but DV.

I guess I got stuck on what would become a problem for the entire program if you continued to edit 30P material at 23.98.

    Sorry,

It is 23.98fps material, it was shot at 23.98, however the codec is 1080p30 when it gets written to the p2 cards, which then is pulled back to p24 when logged and transfered thru fcp.

In fact that was one of the bugs that got fixed between 6.0 and 6.0.1 was this auto pullback, this is how the workflow is supposed to happen. I’ve done 3 features now using this workflow w/ the 1080p material (and 2 more using the 720p workflow) and the only thing that is weird is the gamma out from AE.

It’s a YUV/RGB issue, as in FCP works in YUV space while After Effects works in RGB space. In certain circumstances, depending on what you do to the footage in AE it can clip on re-import. I am tired and honestly don’t remember the workaround, but a search on Google should give you some ideas.

Also, I would definitely use ProRes422 or some other codec besides DVCPROHD for those round trips (don’t know if you already are, doesn’t say in your post), DVCPROHD is lossy, after all.
