Video from Canon DSLR, having problems with dropped frames
I’ve been working on a Macbook Pro in Final Cut Pro mainly with Canon camcorder footage – nothing flashy, and no problems. Recently we invested in a Canon T3i and so I imported DSLR footage for the first time.
I could hardly play the footage for a few seconds before getting dropped frames messages. Thanks to forums like this one, I decided to get a new external (a 3TB G-Drive w/ firewire) and playback is drastically better but still freezes up enough to be irritating.
What else should I try? I’m not familiar with the drive or the camera – maybe a different format to import footage in? Or a setting on the external, or within Final Cut?

Search the forum and you’ll see 10-zillion posts on this subject. Video from DSLRs must be transcoded before editing to an editing codec that FCP likes, like ProRes 422.

Thanks for the reply. And I promise I did look through the forum, but I’m not that fluent in formats or technical language and I wasn’t sure which diagnoses apply to my scenario.
What should I use to transcode my footage? FCP or another program?

Use LOG AND TRANSFER (need to download and install Canon EOS plugin…oh, T3i…you’d have to hack it too)…or use MPEG STREAMCLIP…COMPRESSOR…5DtoRGB…

Hey Hannah,
My workflow works really well for me…do a web search for MpegStreamclip…it is a stand alone piece of software that is priceless. I use it many times per week.
You can drop your footage in it and transcode in a batch to just about anything that you want. I work mainly with Panasonic as my primary source of footage so I usually go to DVCProHD with it.
It seems to be a little faster and less troublesome than using FCP for the transcode.

I used Compressor to translate the files from Quicktime to ProRes 422, but now the dropped frames are worse than ever! Any other suggestions?

“Now we’re into phase #2 – what type of hard drive are you playing the video from? You are using a separate media drive right? And, it’s not a USB drive, right?

I have a brand new 3TB G-Drive, connected via firewire. I have another drive for running Time Machine, so on the GDrive I have my FCP files as well as older, completed projects. Anything else I should look for?

Are any of your firewire hard drives plugged in using firewire 400 cables, or are all firewire 800?
