    Hello all,

this question – or similar – has been posted before but not for a while so I’m writing to see if there is any more knowledge on the matter.

Going to be shooting with a 5D. I believe I’m getting 16:9 footage. But this project (for the web) needs to be delivered 2.35. I’m getting the footage transcoded to pro res 422 hq and editing on quicktime.

What i’ve seen so far is that the best thing to do is edit in 16:9 and when the cut/s are done – apply a 2:35 matte. and then either go to compressor or custom change the aspect ratio on export in FCP to get rid of the black bars?

Does this make sense? Is this still the best method?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jesse.

That’s about it… Although, you will be better off applying slugs on V2 and V3 that approximate the 2:35 matte, because these will enable you to reposition the shots on V1 on the y-axis if and when necessary.

The Widescreen Matte has a Offset slider that will move the clip up or down to better fit in the Widescreen matte.
However, be forewarned that the FCP Widescreen 2.35 setting is 2 pixels different then compressors Panavision 2.35:1 setting.

Remove the matte or slugs before exporting to Compressor. No need to render what you are going to cut off. Just use as a guide during the edit.

This should also alleviate the problem of the small difference between Compressor and FCP.

Keep in mind that if you remove the matte and used the Offset slider it will undo how you moved it with the Offset Slider and the Y position will return to zero.
