  • Recovered MXF Files A Mess

Posted by Nick Hennessey on July 5, 2011 at 9:50 pm

    Hey Y’all,

I just got a drive recovered and the files are all over the place. The reason I had gotten it recovered was to restore a project that has no backup, but since the source MXF files are a mess none of my project files work.

First I tried manually faking the whole MXF file directory (CONTENTS->CLIP etc.) but FCP gave me a message along the lines of “Invalid File Directory,” so I started looking at other possible solutions.

I know there have been threads on this in the past – I originally tried to troubleshoot my issue by taking advice from this one: https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1033640 but I noticed there was never a real solution for this problem because the audio and video files were undistinguishable from one other. Unfortunately this is the case for me too!

I’d love to use either MXF4mac/MXFi Info Light, or Raylight to get the source files into FCP but I’m not sure any of these will help since my audio and video files are in the same folders! Another possible issue is that some MXF files will be from other projects, there were multiple projects on the drive originally and when it was recovered all the files from all the jobs were thrown together.

Can someone point me in the right direction?!?!

    Thank you kindly,
    Nick

With those plugins you will be able to play and edit the clips, but you won’t be able to rebuild any “media folders structure”.
    They have free trials.

If you buy MXF4mac and the MXF Import plugin, that will allow the use of the free Atomic Fusion.

Atomic Fusion will gather and connect all the disparate MXF files and fire them over to FCP connected. From there you can choose what you’d like to do. You can keep editing, or export new self containers for editing, whatever is best.

Yes, they have a free trial. You should definitely give it a shot.

Gotcha. I found free trials for MXF4mac and Atomic Fusion, but when I open them I get a message telling me I need to buy MXF Import QT.

Since my company doesn’t want to buy the software, I’m going to see what I can do here on the Avid.

Did you look in the sys pref under MXF4mac?

I don’t see any MXF4mac stuff in System Preferences.

But when I try to open MXF4mac Player from my applications folder the full message is “MXF Import is not enabled. MXF4mac Player requires MXF Import QT to read MXF files.

You need to go here and fill out the demo request for MXF Import QT:

So I now have access to MXF4mac, and Atomic Fusion. When I open up Atomic Fusion, I see a black, semi-transparent window with buttons “Selection -> FCP” and “All -> FCP.” I’m assuming that if I drag all my recovered MXF files into the window and click “All -> FCP” then I will see the MXF files as videos in FCP – with the audio now linked – and be able to edit them.

Is this how it should look/work? (I wasn’t able to find any manuals)

Yes, it fires over the disparate MXF files as an a/v “clip” and presents them to FCP.

    Have you tried it? 🙂

It does nothing to the files so there’s no harm/damage done

Ha hah! That is just the information I was looking for!

I hadn’t tried it yet – I was in the middle of a 3 hour duplication which I just stopped knowing that the program doesn’t affect the files. I’m just a bit paranoid because we already lost these files once.

I’m having trouble using Atomic Fusion. First I try dragging my MXF files into it and nothing happens. Then I keep clicking Selection -> FCP, and nothing happens there either.

I thought that was the only Atomic Fusion window, but then I noticed another one with a couple small icons, one green, one blue, and both with a triangle/curve design on them. I got the files into an FCP project using these icons, but my audio and video files are still separated…
