hm100 and fcp issues
Sorry for the long post, but here’s the process that has led me here, in full.
Computer 1:
Macbook
OSX 10.5.8, Intel Core 2 Duo
QuickTime™ Version 7.6.9 (1680.9)
FCP 6.0Computer 2:
Macbook Pro
OSX 10.6.6, Intel Core i5
Quicktime Player 7, Version 7.6.6 (1709)

I bought the macbook pro about a week ago. I installed the same version of FCP (from the same dmg as I have been using on the macbook). It opened, and I edited a .mov h.264 file (from a Canon DSLR) on it.
But the hm100 creates .mov files—in fact, this is why I bought it. “World’s first native support for Apple QuickTime file format (for Final Cut Pro)”. Beautiful. And on computer 1 (the older computer, the macbook) it works—drag and drop the files straight into the FCP timeline, no transcoding needed. I assumed that exactly the same version of FCP should handle exactly the same movies in the same way.
But I was wrong. In fact, I couldn’t even open the .mov files in quicktime on the new, better, faster computer. I could open other .mov files (like the H.264 linear pcm 16 bit little endian signed integer ones from my Canon DSLR). I could also edit those files in FCP. Just not the .movs from the hm100.
So, I downloaded this codec, and after buying the license, the XDCAM files opened in Quicktime. But STILL FCP doesn’t recognize them. It just plays a black screen (it doesn’t even offer to change the sequence settings to the file settings when I drop it in the timeline).
All the other software that comes with the hm100 is installed on both computers (log and transfer, file manager).

I assume the problem is a codec one. But why should FCP6 on the macbook be able to read XDCAM EX files, but not the same copy of FCP6 on the macbook pro? Or does quicktime player 7 work differently on the new mac? Essentially my problem is this: if I have to buy FCStudio 7 for the new macbook pro, I’ve spent £2,000 on a computer/software package (and wasted $80 on the calibratedqx software). Now that I’m on the road filming, I don’t have the dmg of FCP 6.0 to reinstall FCP.
What do I do? What support service is out there for me to actually talk to and resolve this problem? I’m in Lisbon…

If I’m not wrong Calibrated is uncompatible with FC on the same computer.
Both EX components conflicts.What makes me wonder, is why are you able to play the EX stuff on FC 6.0?
FC supports EX only since v.6.0.2.
I guess you have installed Callibrated in both computers.
The old one is not giving you troubles because don’t have duplicated the EX component.
Your FC 6.0 don’t have it.
IMHO, you should uninstall Calibrated from the Intel.

This thread is my issue. But I don’t have the option to update FCP. And I’m not in England to reinstall what I already have.

I only installed Calibrated because I was having this issue. And as far as I can tell, I don’t have Calibrated installed on the first computer (I’ve searched for “calibrated”, and it doesn’t come up). The only thing that Calibrated did when I installed it on the new computer was to make quicktime recognise the XDCAM files. In other words, Quicktime was not able to read the XDCAM files before installing Calibrated, regardless of FCP. Surely that’s not supposed to happen…
Other things I have on these computers — perian and Apple QMaster. Can’t see how that would affect it.

This post seems to say that you need to install a later version of FCP to install the extra quicktime components to play…..
oh, FUDGE.
How has this happened?!
I’m sorry for wasting everybody’s time. But, although I seem to have FCP 6.0 on the other computer, I have 6.0.6 on the old one. I don’t know how this happened (I only have one copy of FCP!)
How did I update FCP on this one to fcp 6.0.6?! It’s an academic version…

So now we find two weird things:
– That you can run EX stuff on FC 6.0: This is impossible without a QT component.
Have a look again on main/library/Quick Time/.
See which third part components you have.– That you can not run EX stuff on FC 7: Clearly something has gone wrong when you installed.
BTW, the Plugin literature states:
Not meant for or needed on computers with Final Cut Pro/Studio/Server; however it can be used on computers with only Final Cut Express.

Second question — I can’t seem to work out how to update my FCP 6.0 to FCP 6.0.6. I just took another look at it, and it isn’t the academic version.
But now I can’t find updates to 6.0.6 from 6.0. Anyone know the link? 🙂

Run it, don’t worry.
Is possible that you need to install more than one package.
