Morphing Water
Hi all,
the Peugeot 308 Commercial (available on: https://youtube.com/watch?v=3KxJasm3cxQ) shows a nice effect of water waves morphing into a lion-face (and later another effect using dust), an effect quite similar to the one shown during the first episode of The Lord of The Rings.
How did they do that? Is it a huge particle-system or they’ve used a trick?

There’s an error in the URL you provided. Here’s the -> correct URL
It’s definitely a particle generator and it’s more definitely done in a 3D application. You may want to have a look at Digital Element’s Aurora Sky for something similar. It’s supposed to support the use of grayscale images as displacement and bump maps for clouds. There is a possibility that it’ll be able to do a similar effect with clouds. According to Cinefex, here’s how the LOTR effect was achieved: Digital Domain “created the water horses through volumetric animation tied into the company’s in-house fluid simulation program”.

Thanx a lot RoRK and Steve, and I’m sorry for the wrong URL :). Anyway it doesn’t seem an easy job to make at home, at least not when liquids (and gravity) are involved, but it seems an easier job with clouds… I’m really eager to try :).
