Posted by George Sloan on January 26, 2011 at 8:42 pm

Please advise me as to the best Quality workflow beginning with an important 30 minute project that has been shot and edited in 1O80i …then rendered (with compression markers)to JPEG2000 or JPEG Photo.

I have exported to quicktime conversion and the movie looks great but here this problem..

When compressing to DVD SD 4:3 either directly to compressor or QT then compressor. I am getting less than desirable results in terms of picture/color quality when played back as a dvd. (the 16:9 letter boxing and aspect ratio is perfect)…Need advice on workflow/settings starting with the Jpeg timeline.

    Thanks George Sloan sloanmotion.com

    hi George
can you describe “less than desirable” what are you seeing in the DVD that looks wrong?

also, what was it shot on?

and why the jpeg 2000 conversion? was it done by sequence settings?

…dvd’s tend to generally look less than desirable when compared to their HD source

    Thanks Hector
less desirable means means that i would like to produce better quality image for final input
to sd dvd…will use for for dvd distribution and local broadcast…but don’t let deter you from
original question.. i use JPEG 2000 because I love it.

Question is about workfow/settings see recent previous post

    Thanks Hector
Sorry about multiple posts but my first post. yesterday which was comprehensive is yet to be answered.
To further answer your questions it was shot in a cannon xh a1 in 1O80i thus the 1080i timeline.
Switched to Jpeg2000 in sequence settings and rendered full for 4 hours…now jerky in canvas.

    – Avoid QT Conversion like the pest. No control on any process.
    – In Compressor set “Frame Control ON” and “Resize Filter” BEST or BETTER

[george sloan] ” i use JPEG 2000 because I love it.”

love makes people do all sorts of irrational things 🙂

i would recommend the following workflow

i believe you captured via FW to HDV files.
    next time
capture to Prores HQ (you have a preset for that, HDV – Prores, in the audio video settings

    use a Prores sequence setting

export quicktime movie using current settings – do not recompress all frames

in compressor, do what Rafael recommended in his reply

test this out for a short segment, and compare it to what you got previously

    hope this helps

    Rafael,

I see you adapted my Compressor downscale advice
Which wasn’t really good in your opinion right?

I have to say, the FCP downscale solution is nice too, but not as good as Compressor Resize filter;)

    Hi Paul,
Setting the “Frame Control ON” is not critical just because its allows to chose different filter “qualities”, but because allows Compressor works in 32b Floating Point (up to the Compressor manual).
However, I have to say that, personally, I don’t think that FC (when set to High Precision and Motion Effects: BEST) makes a worst job than Compressor. In fact I doubt very much if is worth the pain of going to Compressor instead of downscaling in FC. I think that probably both use the same engine.

Last year I made some serious (?) downscaling tests with all the applications I had available:
    – Compressor
    – Purifier
    – SHAKE.
Since then, I only use SHAKE for any downscaling. The difference with the other applications is indescribable.
    Cheers,
    rafael

Hm interesting. I will to some tests with Shake then.

Compressor is nicer when you use a Cluster ( Qmaster settings )
This way you can use all the cores in your MacPro in Compressor.

    Cheers.
