PSD Files Won’t Import Correctly to FCP
Posted by Martin Bentsen on January 3, 2011 at 10:05 pmI have searched forums far and wide, but to no avail. I cannot get my .psd files to import to Final Cut with layers.
I have taken the original .psd files and re-saved them (to make sure they were saved in a mac computer), I turned on “maximize compatibility,” I have removed any blank layers, I have removed folders of layers so that there is nothing to get in the way of final cut being able to import. Additionally, i have tried saving to 8 bit, 16 bit, and 32 bit. Nothing has worked.
Does anyone have any more suggestions? I have a huge project that needs completing in a few days and this is making it difficult since I don’t have AE installed on my laptop and I’m on the road. Thank you in advance!

January 3, 2011 at 10:43 pmWhat kind of layers are in your PSD?
if you have any vector or non Rasterized layers, FCP doesn’t read them.Duplicate your project into a new file and rasterize all of your layers.
No Vector layers at all.If you have already rasterized, try making empty layers and merging the existing layers.
I hope this works for you.

January 3, 2011 at 11:13 pmThank you for responding so quickly!
I tried both of what you said, you were right, and I had some unrasterized layers, so I rasterized everything. When that didn’t work, i tried creating new empty layers and merging them with the existing ones, but that didn’t work either.
I’m beginning to think that there might be a preference in Final Cut Pro that changes imported psd files to flattened files? I don’t know if this is a possibility, but if it is, how would I go about fixing that? Otherwise, could there be any other things that I can try in photoshop?
Thank you so much, your help is greatly appreciated.

January 3, 2011 at 11:33 pmtake a screenshot of what your PSD sequence in FCP looks like, as well as your seq settings.
You can also change you external editor for stills as PS. That is not the problem.
What version of PS are you on?*Production*Post-Production*

January 4, 2011 at 12:04 amThere are no sequence settings for the psd files, that is the problem. they are importing as a flat image file. Take a look:
I changed the external editor setting to photoshop, but still not working, as you suggested.
I am using photoshop CS4, version 11.0.2

January 4, 2011 at 12:07 amYes, I had read that when searching earlier today, but couldn’t find a clear answer on how to change that. How can I go about switching the color space to RGB from CMYK (if it’s not already in RGB space)?

January 4, 2011 at 12:17 amIMPORTANT (maybe)
I realized the photoshop files I was given have separate frames in them… I don’;t know much about motion and frames in photoshop, but this may have something to do with it not importing correctly.
Is this possible? Is there a way to turn off the frame/video options in Photoshop and just make this a still image .psd file?

January 4, 2011 at 12:20 amWhen you are importing are you using file>import
Try creating a New FCP Project, then drag the PSD in from the finder window.
See if this works. If that doesnt work, you can also…..
export a still from your fcp project and export using QT conversion as a PSD file then open
Copy all elements from your PSD project into the Exported PSD from FCP then save and import that into FCP.Again, Try dragging in from the finder window instead of file>import

January 4, 2011 at 1:31 amGOT IT!
Tried all of the first tips, then got to creating the psd file in fcp and copying the layers over. That worked! I guess it must be some sort of issue with the photoshop file. I told my client to change the settings and copy the files over, so everything should be fine.
Thanks again to everyone who helped!
