New i7 w/ FCP 6.0 not recognizing Sony Capture Deck
I just upgraded to a 2.93 GHz Core i7. We have FCP 6.0 and it now won’t recognize my Sony HVR-M15AU. This machine has the new firewire but beyond that what would be different. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You didn’t connect the machine to the iMac while it was turned on, did you? That can fry the Sony VTR Firewire port and / or the iMac Firewire port.
Beyond that, if you’re trying to capture HDV, be sure you’re in an HDV Easy Setup and make sure the Sony deck is set for HDV playback via firewire.
If you’re trying to capture DV, then you have to ensure you have the Firewire set to downconvert to DVCAM via Firewire for FCP to properly recognize the deck.
When we run our Sony HDV decks via the AJA Kona boards, we have to set the Firewire output to downconvert to DVCAM for deck control.

Actually I did. Unfortunately I was not aware of that issue, as this is not the first time I have connected a deck to an iMac. This is a secondary machine and the first one I’m positive i connected them will on. Do you have thoughts on how I would know if something was fried in your words. 🙂

Additional info……….I just hooked the deck up to 1 year old iMac and all works fine. So perhaps bad firewire or something with the new iMac…?

Any firewire device should be turned off before it is connected to a computer to prevent an electric surge that has been known to fry firewire ports.
Does any other firewire device work when connected to the same iMac? If so, then you most likely have your VTR or FCP Easy Setup set incorrectly to control the VTR. We have three of the M15U’s here and always have the iLink sent to downconvert to DVCAM since we capture via the component outputs to our Kona cards. We just use the Firewire for device control.

so try a different firewire device like a ext. HD and see.
