Audio Render time with DV Stream file (.dv)
Hello,
I have to do minor editing to files that I am ripping from a DVD. I am taking the DVD stream into MPEG Streamclip and exporting a file using DV Stream. I cannot sacrifice anymore quality with the video, but rendering audio for 2 hours in FCP for each 5 hour movie is not acceptable. Any idea what settings I can change in FCP or MPEG Streamclip to make this process faster?
The file being exported out of MPEG Streamclip is 720×480 with 48 Khz audio stereo. The data rate is 57mits/s.

Don’t export to .DV is a crappy format that needs always to be rendered in FC.
Export as QT Movie. The best codec would be 8b Uncompress. If the clip is long, use Prores.

When we export using QT from MPEG Streamclip, we get scan lines and other unwanted artifacts. What settings should I use when in MPEG StreamClip when I go to File/Export to Quicktime?
Right now it is set to the defaults: 640×480, Apple Motion JPEG A Compression, Interlaced Scaling, Reinterlace Chroma, X/Y 1, quality 50%.
Since the clips are long, in FCP use the regular 422 ProRes for the sequence setting?

“This is all completely wrong. Don’t do this. Do what Rafael says. Use either 8 Bit Uncompressed or Pro Res 422. Do not use ProRes HQ. No benefit on footage from DVD…just larger file size.
What format is your final output? If its DVD (or DV tape), keep it at 720 x 480.

Hi Jenny,
Make sure that you just transcode the clip.
Don’t change the size and make sure that you set properly the Field Order (have a look in the “Stream Info” to know the field order of the MPEG-2).
Set Proress. The Quality slide its doesn’t work for Prores.

So in MPEG Streamclip open the VIDEO_TS stream, make sure field order is correct, use ProRes, export with ProRes, and then Transcode the clip in FCP to ProRes?

The clip has been already transcoded in MPGStreamclip.
Drop it in a new sequence and conform it to the clip. You won’t need to render.

Just to confirm:
I just put in the DVD and opened up MSC, it says “upper field first”, under File/Show Stream Info. Then go to File/Export to QuickTime and under Compression select Apple ProRes 422, make sure field dominance says “upper field first”, then export?
Then when I drag into FCP, just say “yes” to change sequence settings?

BTW, I am seeing the quality option for Apple ProRes 422.

The quality slider does not do anything in ProRes. (This is true for many other codecs too. It should really get “greyed out”, but I guess the Quicktime team likes to confuse people)
You want lower field first if you are working in NTSC.

Why am I seeing “upper field first” when I’m in MSC then direct from the DVD?
