  • Animate a layer behind a mask?

Posted by Andy Taplin on September 3, 2007 at 3:32 pm

    Hi

I don’t know why I’m having trouble with this but it’s driving me crazy.

I just want to animate a layer bahind a mask so that the layer moves but the mask stays put. So the mask is like a window through to the layer and the layer moves inside it.

I’m using the pan behind tool to move the layer which is fine but as soon as I try and animate the position over time with a couple of keyframes the mask moves as well.

Any ideas – this should be really easy!

OK I figured it out just after I posted.

It looks like you set the mask path keyframes at the same time as the position keyframes and then they kind of cancel each other out!

Still a little obscure for such an obvious thing to want to do…

You can also mask a separate layer and use that as a track matte for the animated layer below.

    Thanks Steve

So mask a solid layer and have it above the animated layer?

Yep. Set the upper to be the track matte of the lower. Check the help for that.

Old thread, but you can also pre-compose your layer, keeping the mask on the composition, and then animate your layer inside the new composition. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, nice to see the old threads still get read.

More than one way to ‘skin a cat’ in AFX for sure.
