MacBook pro to Mac Pro, what’s best for me
Hi, Hope I’m in the right forum, I’ve been using MacBook Pro 7200 4gigs of ram to cut and it’s been great but vas workload increases I know I need a new machine. I just got FCP Studio 7 an upgrade from 5.1 and want to upgrade system to Ma Pro.
I have about a total of 5k to spend and need help with what to get. * core will last longer I’m sure but am I making a mistake.

Probably should post more about what format you normally work in, and which apps you like to run at the same time etc.. then we’d all have a better suggestion as to what you should be buying. do you do a lot of compression for the web etc? Just post what you do…

The only reason I see to buy a MBP instead of a MP is mobility. So unless you need to be able to edit on location, go for the MP.

Jerry, Thanks in advance, new to the forum so pardon the inexperience.
I’ve been doing a fair amount of internal corporate work that I’ve been able to send electronically using QT conversions and such using Compressor as well. I’m still green no doubt but turning a darker green everyday. That being said, the better I’ve become the more intense the work flow has become and I find myself playing catch up, which is OK but feel I may need to dive in and jump on the conveyer belt.
By that, I want to upgrade my system. I’ve been using academic 5.1 on MacBook Pro 4G for three years and just this week purchased the latest FCP Studio. I want to get a machine that can grow with my needs. I also want to start learning and utilizing After effects as well.
I know it’s endless what I can spend but want to be as smart as possible.
I hope this makes some sense…

Rafael, Thanks but I’ve had a MBP and want to upgrade to MP. MBP is great but want to build a system with a MB.

It really depends on your needs but keep in mind that you can buy refurbished if you don’t need the latest and greatest. You might also want to check place like Ebay and Craigslist for used machines. I bought mine off Craigslist – 8 core 2.66Ghz, 6gigs of RAM (adding more) for $2000 still under Apple Care and it works great. I got it from a Motion Graphics company in Manhattan. It was a freelance box but they were going through tough times, didn’t have enough work for freelancers, and so it was just sitting there.

Just buy the most powerful Desktop you can afford.

I agree with Rafael and Chris. Go with a desktop system unless you have a job related reason to use a laptop.

I just looked on Craigslist in NY just to see and I found a Mac Pro with these specs (copied directly from the posting):
