Dear Cow,

I am strugling with the question of interlacing and hope a wizard can help.

Project: broadcast /two output: mov and digibeta
Media capture: AVCHD 1080i /prores422
question: footage looks awful on 1080 p full hd display with the shadow effect of interlacing ( field dom: upper); do I absolutely have to deinterlace with filter? I thought “I” should play well on full hd (p) TV ( like there is an converting engine in tv) display….

By deinterlacing, do I not loose quality?

Basically, how to deal with avchd and interlaced footage for broadcast”? My photo jpeg footage is progressive and looks fine….

Yes, you do. You throw away half the resolution of your picture.

my config: i mac 2.7 gz 4 gb ram 320 gb HDD

interlacing also is very visible on i mac display…. what can i do?

thanks. I am confused, am I doomed to either interlaced or half quality when NOT playing on CRT display?

Basicaly, how to get my interlaced footage looked stunning on a flat display?

You need a true capture device that you send a proper video signal and not an HDMI bastardization over DVI.

If your output is digi beta, then your final is standard def and therefore interlaced for broadcast. Do not deinterlace.

I suspect your problems are in the way you are connecting to your monitor. You need a proper interface like Kona, Matrox or Decklink to output to an external monitor.

So I’ll keep interlaced for this ..although, satelite broadcast ends mostly on flat progressive screens this days.

so if i-> goes to p and I do not want to loose quality,any possible workflow?

This is true, but there’s no 1080p broadcast spec yet. Flat screens are setup to deal with 1080i material.
