  • Exporting 16:9?

This is probably a pretty bushleague question but I’ve got to cut what amounts to a slideshow in FCP at 16:9.

In sequence settings I used a 720×480 frame size but clicked on the anamorphic 16:9 option when cutting. In Final Cut it’s 16:9 but upon exporting it’s back to 4:3–I’m sure it’s a very simple reason why but what gives?

The footage is 4:3 anamorphic. FCP stretches out the image so you can see it properly. QT often does not. You’ll need to export it with 16:9 ratio numbers (640×360 for example) if you want to see it FULL 16:9.

What are you trying to export it for?

Ahh that makes sense. The client wants it for the web but with the photos at full resolution and at 16:9 for youtube so I was planning on not compressing it at all.

Do you think I need to drop everything into a 640 x 360 sequence to make it fly?

Photos at “full resolution” are pretty poor when it comes to DV. 720×480 (well, a bit wider with anamorphic), and 72dpi. This is something you’d adjust in Photoshop.

For YouTube, you export at whatever resolution you want it to play there. Just do the math and make it a multiple of 16:9.

No…that is the WRONG thing to do. You work in your native resolution, and then export to the format you need when done.
