  • Conform HPX 48fps Footage to Canon 7D 24p

Posted by Bill Brownstein on December 17, 2009 at 9:53 pm

I recently shot some footage at 48fps on my Panasonic HPX-170 and I’m trying to match it up to 24p stuff I shot on my 7D. I increased the speed % of the 48fps footage to 200%. It’ll start fine but slowly drift more and more out of sync.

Is there a more exact number to alter the speed by or do I have to do something totally different to sync this stuff up? Thanks!

Right click on the file in the Finder and choose Open With > Cinema Tools.

Then hit the conform button and choose 23.976 (or 24.0 depending on your 7D footage).

Since I shot the Panasonic footage in 48fps (slow motion) it already appears in the timeline as 23.98. So it doesn’t seem to be the frame rate that’s the problem but the velocity at which the clip is played back.

I’m able to successfully sync the 7D footage to an audio track that was recorded separately at the shoot. No matter what percentage I speed the Panasonic footage to I can’t get it to conform to either that separate audio track nor the 7D footage.

But you shot the Panasonic footage at half the speed, so no wonder it doesn’t sync?

Right, but by changing the speed at which the footage plays back, I should be able to make it play as if I shot it at the normal frame rate. That’s why I don’t understand why it doesn’t sync up when I speed it up 200%.

Either it needs to be a more exact number (like 201.10% for example) or there’s something major I’m missing.

If with the Panasonic I shoot for one minute at 48fps, the resulting clip when I bring it into FCP is 2 minutes long at 23.98. So going by that, I should be able to speed up the velocity to 200% and get a clip that plays just as if it was shot in 24P, right?

Go by time instead of percentage take the amount of time and divide it by two instead of entering 200%.

How do I conform the time of the clip?

My test 48fps clip is 03:09:08 so half of that is 01:34:16.

Put the clip on a new and separate timeline. Select it and hit command-j.

Tried it and it still doesn’t work. Nice to know about that option though. Maybe there’s something else wrong that I’m not thinking of. I can’t really understand why this doesn’t work; there must be a way.

Does the Canon shot at 23’98 or at “real p24” ?
