  • 2D animations imported in FCP + Timeline Sequence settings for such animations

Posted by Donia Mili on November 22, 2009 at 4:23 am

I have been working with 2D cartoons/animations in my FCP movie project. The problem is that the animations have too many glitches once they are in FCP, not to mention they do not always look right on screen.

The second question/problem I have is that I do not know how to work with these 2D cartoons in FCP. If I bring them in on the timeline -from the bin to the timeline- FCP asks me if I want to change my sequence settings. Once I actually tried to change my sequence settings, and it turned “psychedelic” for my very real, documentary-oriented footage. Should I put these cartoons on another sequence, and hope that they will reunite with the rest of the film upon launching? Should I continue to insert these animations on my timeline, in the regular way, and hope that the glitches I see will be overlooked by me and the audience?

All the 2D cartoons are QuickTime files.

Thank you for your time, reflections, and energy.

Quicktime files can be one of a DOZEN codecs. What is the exact codec of the footage you are trying to edit? And what frame rate? It can’t be something like 12fps or 15fps…must be 24fps, 23.98, 29.97…stuff like that.

FCP can’t edit many formats, including the ANIMATION codec. The ones it does work with you’ll find in the EASY SETUP list.

Are you using Toon Boom to create your animations? If so you can export your animations as image sequences, then set your still import duration in FCP’s user preferences to 1 or 2 frames, depending on how many frames per second you designed the animations to be.

Next step after you import the images, is to create a sequence which is exactly the same as your source video is… DV HDV, whatever… be sure that the still images now in the folder are in order… as in 001,002,003… etc. Drag the folder to that new sequence and export this zillion edit sequence as a self contained QuickTime movie using”current settings”.

OR choose the settings in toon Boom’s QuickTime export to match those of your source video you’re mixing these with. DV, HDV or whatever… Is this what you are doing?

I don’t have Toon Boom here so can’t give you much of a step by step on the export settings in it…

    Thank you Shane and Jerry….

Firstly, I am not familiar with ToonBoom. I had hired a cartoonist while I was shooting in the Rainforest, and he let me down, but did produce a few of the cartoons he was paid for.

These animations were for the most part given to me in QT format as I had asked for, compressed in Sorenson video 3 for the most part, or simply Animation:

with Vid Rate: 29.97 fps (one animation has 30 fps)

    with a Frame Size: 720 X 486

Data rate 732.6K/sec (this varies GREATLY between animations)

    Pixel Aspect: NTSC -CCIR 601

I will look into what you both propose, later on today, and see if it will lead me to the path of victory.

    Best

    Hi Donia,
There is a huge difference between Sorenson 3 and Animation.
The first is a compressed format for distribution and you better avoid to drop it in an FC sequence..
Animation is a high quality RGB codec.
Open a new sequence and drop one of the Animation clips. When FC asks you to conform, it yes.
See if FC keeps behaving psychedelic.

Well, Sorenson isn’t an editing codec, true, but neither is Animation. You can’t edit that without a BIG FAST raid. Convert both to something like ProRes and you should be good to go.
