cinema tools / fcp / home telecine and xdcam – help!

i seem to have gotten myself into a complicated pulldown / framerate situation that i can’t untangle. i’m inexperienced with working in fcp with film, and trying to do some tests to model possible workflows for a project i’m about to start. i shot a 16mm test roll with separately recorded sync sound (recorder on a handheld digital audio recorder) and am trying to test out the syncing process in fcp. i did a cheap / home telecine with the footage, shooting with the xdcam from a projection. i shot at 720 30P, which might have been my first mistake (not to use a 24 fps framerate). but i thought i could use cinematools to reverse this. now in fcp when i sync up the sound, the sync drifts badly after a few seconds, i presume due to the extra frames added by the video camera. when i try to do a “reverse telecine” on this test clip in fcp or in cinema tools is gives me an error message and says it can’t process this clip. when i look up the format info, it does say that the frame rate is 29.97 fps… so i’m not sure why it can’t do the reverse telecine. what am i doing wrong? or is there something i can do with my audio to add the same number of extra frames? or should i use a different camera format in the future? any advice would be much appreciated.

Regardless of frame rate woes, there is no way you can project and shoot an image on camera that will hold sync with location sound.
Do a proper telecine where everything is referenced. Get them to supply 1080 ProRes files at 24fps. provided the film camera was crystal synced @ 24 fps and the audio record device had a decent crystal lock, the two should sync properly.

YOu can’t reverse telecine GOP formats like HDV or XDCAM.
And I HIGHLY doubt that a home transfer of this type will sync up properly. The projector isn’t designed to run at a constant…RIGIDLY CONSTANT…rate of speed. Only a proper telecine at a film post house will sync with secondary audio. In my experience.

Right. Neither you can Conform. It happens with MPEG-2 GOP based, H264 and so. You can do that only with Intraframe codecs.
