  • What’s the deference between Konna 3 and LHi

Posted by Salah Elfalahi on October 21, 2009 at 7:36 pm

    Hi all
My main reason to buy one of them is to monitor color grading and down scale full HD to SD to get the best possible quality. i never work with higher than full HD. is LHi enough for me ? and if you could be kind with me and tell me what’s the deference between Kona 3 and LHi.
By the way i went through their website but i couldn’t comprehend most of the terms as i never worked with uncompressed stuff….
    thanks very much
    salah

kona 3 will only do analog audio monitoring if you buy the kbox

I’m not an expert, but I believe the main difference is the Kona 3 has mainly digital ins and outs – HD-SDI & SDI for video and AES for audio (although, there are two analog audio RCA outs and a component/composit/s-video out); and the LHi adds more analog I/O and HDMI. The Kona 3 can also deal with Dual-Link and 2k.

Kona 3 has a few more inputs and outputs.

Kona 3 supports 2k workflows which the LHi does not.

Kona 3 support Dual Link uncompressed HD which the LHi does not.

For the base features, they are pretty much the same. Up / Down / Cross Conversion are standard on both.

    thanks walter
now i understand that i dont need kana 3 as long as i dont work with 2k and LHi is enough to down convert full HD to SD. but, i only have Sony HVR-M15AE HDV Deck (fire wire) input, what else do i need to be able to capture from the LHi card into my deck (as far as i know there is no fire wire output from LHi ?
    thanks

If you truly only have Firewire input to your deck, you will not have any need for the LHi as that deck will destroy any quality gains by compressing your footage back to HDV. There is no Firewire output on the LHi, only via the Mac.

You have a choice of Composite analog or Firewire for input.

COMPOSITE out to the HDV deck? Ugh…yuck. That will look like CRUD. Firewire out…PRINT TO VIDEO. That will get you better results. ONly the 1500 deck has a good input option, SDI…but even then, there is some loss.

[salah Elfalahi] “so LHi will do for me”

Yes on the composite video but that won’t be HD. It’ll be the worst possible quality SD you can record to tape.

For HD, your only option is Firewire.
