Recording live footage into Final cut pro using a firewire
I am trying to film with a Sony PD 170 using a firewire cable running into my MacBook Pro so I can have the footage being stored immediately into the program. I have been having a hard time doing it. It keeps saying “device must be in VTR mode when device in enabled” when I press capture now. What does that mean? The camera is on and running fine. what other steps do I need to take?

Try setting control mode within log and capture settings to “uncontrolled device”, then see if it is still seeing a camera picture?

Thank you for your response. Sorry I wasn’t being clear enough though. i can see a picture and everything but the problem is I can’t record it for some reason. When I press capture now it keeps saying “device must be in VTR mode when device in enabled.” Then I have to press esc. to get out. Any advice is very much aprecaited, Thanks agian.

Make sure your camera is on free run time code. Final Cut pro is looking for Time code..
It works very well with our HVX200.. Recorded over 36 hours once to a hard drive with no drop outs or other problems except FC doesn’t recognize quicktimes over 12 hours long.. So it would not open in FC. But it played back in the QT player.

You have to do want Mark said, Device control needs to be “Non-controlible” to capture live.

This makes no sense at all. Free Run TC is used by the camera on recording. Even for recording is almost a no-no: You will have a jump in your TC whenever rec/stop.
