Super Cool Glow !!
Posted by Rajarshi Basu on July 23, 2007 at 8:09 pmHi,
I have this situation where…
I have a shot of a car headlight at night…static shot…now I want at least one light streak from the car headlights… to be horizontal… instead of looking like a Shine effect…any suggestions how to achieve this simple yet…confusing problem ??
Thanks

July 23, 2007 at 8:23 pmTrapecode Lux might do it. But, it is a plugin that will cost you.
Is the beam of light already there? Are you just trying to increase the brightness of the beam?

Try creating a matte of just the lights (you can probably do this with levels, possibly threshold) then placing that above the original footage, changing the blend mode to ‘Add’ and applying a Box Blur effect with Iterations: 4, Horizontal Only, Repeat Edges and Radius to taste.
You can add some color to the effect with Colorama, Tint, or playing with your Levels settings (depending on what you want).

July 24, 2007 at 1:13 amThe way I understand it, you want a beam of light “shooting” out of the car lights – right? Like what you’d see from a flashlight in a dusty room?
Your question isn’t exactly clear, so I apologize if this doesn’t answer your question…
What I do in situation like this is create a white solid. Then I use the mask tools to draw the shape of the light beam (usually a cone of light). Then I set it’s transparency to maybe 70%. Then I set the layer’s transfer mode to Add.
Again, I may be missing the point of your question. Sorry if it;s not what you need.

Good point… I assumed we were talking about the ever popular horizontal flare =O

Since I dont own the plug in, I have to try it the Aarohns way, it looks really simple…
What i want to do is…instead of the sreaks of liht shooting out in a diverging manner from the headlight…have only the white glow of the headlight, and 1 thin blue horiontal ray of light…formed from the ligt source..a bit stylized..im sure we see it applied a lot n photoshop and else where,..
