  • Weird Sony XDCAM Transfer Clip Error…

Posted by Kellen Dengler on September 14, 2009 at 8:34 pm

I’m importing some XDCAM clips shot on an EX3 into FCP using the XDCAM Transfer application. They were shot on an SDHC card with an adapter. All of the clips are transferring over no problem except for one.

I narrowed it down to which one is not transferring over and have tried pulling it in separately full and with In/Out points. Every single time it begins to transfer, gets about a third of the way done and then XDCAM Transfer Application gives me an error telling me the device has not been removed properly. This is very weird to me because the clip plays just fine in the XDCAM Transfer application.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Is there any other way to extract this clip?

    Thanks!

Could it be that specific clip spans two memory cards?

No it didn’t span over. The card isn’t even full and this is a clip that was shot in the middle of all the others. It’s so weird.

Some more things I have found out that may clue someone in to what is happening:

    – Using XDCAM Clip Broswer I am able to back up every single shot on the SDHC card except this one
    – Using XDCAM Transfer I am able to import every single other clip except this one into FCP
    – Log and Transfer does not work either in FCP

Someone else suggested using Claibrated SOftware and opening the clip in QT then exporting into something usable in FCP. Does anyone think that may work or have experience doing anything like that?

crazy idea from a newbi here.. could you import it into imovie first and drag it in that way? or drag it from the source onto the desktop and import it from there? can you copy paste it?

In the past with similar trouble clips I’ve copied the offending clip to my desktop in finder and then imported from there.

Never struck this particular problem though so your mileage may vary.

By copying to the desktop do you mean changing the import destination to the desktop in XDCAM Transfer?

If so, I tried that and it doesn’t work. I can’t get this clip to export off of this card…

Unfortunately iMovie is not compatible with XDCAM only .DV files and I cannot export the clip out of XD Clip Browser in any format. When I drag and drop it’s just an XML reference file…

    Leopard 10.5.8

Both my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro are running this version of Leopard and the same problem is happening on both…

Never used this trick with an SDHC card before, so hopefully it works the way I think it does.

In finder the card should mount as a removable drive. You should be able to access it directly on the desktop. There will be a directory called something like ‘clips’ which will contain the the actual media. Copy the appropriate file to your desktop. Then use XD Transfer to import the copy from the desktop.

OR, you might need to copy the entire card to the desktop for this trick to work. Just copy the contents to a folder, and the point XD Transfer at that folder on your desktop.

I’m not sure how sensitive XD Transfer is to the directory structure. Been a while since I had to do this.

    Hope it helps.
