Getting HD on my SONY PVM-14L5 Monitor
I’ve recently upgraded my G5 with a new Mac Pro Octo-Core, using FCP7.
I’m doing more HD now, and I want to continue using my beloved SONY CRT for monitoring.I’m trying to determine what my best option is for getting a Component HD signal to my PVM-14L5 from my Mac. Preferably with fairly accurate color.
I also plan on eventually getting a large consumer HD display with HDMI, for monitoring as well.
Does the MXO2 Mini provide a better quality image than the Intensity Pro?
Or should I just save my $$ and go for the Intensity Pro since it’s cheaper?I just need a monitoring solution, no digitizing.
Do I have another option besides those two?I appreciate any and all suggestions…

We’ve always used the AJA Kona boards here.
Keep in mind, when you switch from SD to HD you have to recalibrate the monitor manually. Same when you go back from HD to SD. That’s one of the little “gotchas” with those monitors. I have the 14L5/1 in our machine room and the 20″ still for sale. Awesome monitors, but you do have to take those extra steps to make sure you’re seeing proper color in both SD and HD.

I know AJA Kona makes quality stuff, but I believe their least expensive option is about $1000, right?
I am hoping to get a quality signal to my monitor for less than that…

Well this person would rather not pay a grand if something can do it for a couple hundred $$.

I hope that “this person” is at least charging his HD clients an appropriate amount of money for his new HD camera, and not giving it away. It’s perfectly ok if you get to keep the money in your pocket, and make lots of money for yourself. It’s not ok if you need cheap gear, because you are giving away HD production for free.
Us morons out here buy all the right HD equipment because we charge more money for HD production and editing.Bob Zelin

I’m just diggin’ myself into a nice hole upgrading all my gear…I just want to get an HD image to my Sony…

The Intensity Pro will get a signal to your monitor fine. As will just about any HD capture card from Decklink, Matrox or AJA. They will get an identical signal…so if cost is your main consideration, then the Decklink will work fine.

I’ve read that the MXO2 outputs a 10-bit signal, vs. the Intensity Pro’s 8-bit.
How exactly will that impact the signal I see on my monitor? More color space? Better accuracy?Is getting the MXO2 the better option based on that?
Thanks everyone for helping me out, I definitely care about quality and don’t mind spending the money to get the better product.
I learned early on not to skimp and cut corners with gear, but I don’t want to throw money away either. -

Yeah, but your monitor is only capable of 8-bit. Not many monitors are 10-bit capable. Well, not many sub-$10,000 monitors. So getting a 10-bit card won’t help you.
