HELP with HDCAMSR!!
Posted by Aaron Neitz on August 23, 2009 at 3:38 pmWe’ve rented a deck and I can’t figure out what’s wrong!
I need to layoff 1080/23.98. The deck has “EXT SD” lit up – there is NOTHING connected except my HDSDI cable. I can switch it to EXT HD/INPUT VIDEO but EXT SD still stays lit up.
which leads me to think the next problem is related:
I’m getting DF timecode over my deck control.
If I try and EDIT to TAPE, no matter what I type as my IN timecode, it won’t accept it and defaults to 00:47:54;26
It seems like the deck is trying to work in pulldown mode. But I’ve turned all the pulldown functions off.
I’m at a loss. It’s sunday morning and waiting for a call from their technical support but need to be laying off NOW!

August 23, 2009 at 3:42 pmIt was the frame converter on the deck! It was set to 1080i/5994 and that was causing havoc, I set it to 444 1080/2398
But something still seems fishy.

August 23, 2009 at 4:19 pmYou should be using a tri-level sync generator if you are doing 23.98.
You have also given no info whatsoever about your setup, including what model deck you are using and what capture card you have.
There are about a 100 ways to screw this up with an HD-CAM SR deck. Lots of menu driven stuff thats not exactly intuitive. Make sure you read the manual thoroughly if you have never done it before.
This ain’t like laying off to digibeta…trust me.

August 23, 2009 at 4:35 pmSorry John you’re right, I should post system info. I do know my way around an SR deck fairly well. I just got wrapped up in Sunday morning panic.
Everytime I’ve used an SR deck it greys out the FC selections which would be “invalid” or cause problems, right? I could swear I’ve been working in 1080/2398 and the FC was set to 1080i/5994 without issues before.

August 23, 2009 at 9:56 pmAaron,
John is exactly right, except for one thing – it is EXACTLY like laying off to Digi Beta. With the Digi Beta and the SRW-5500, if you do not genlock your editing system and the Sony Ref Video Input to the EXACT SAME GENLOCK SOURCE (think AJA GEN10, Blackmagic Sync Generator, Evertz 7750, etc), you will not only suffer (as you are suffering), you will get CHANNEL ERROR CONDITIONS, and your tape will get rejected by the TV Stations. What on earth gives you the impression that you can even work in this business without owning or renting a black/sync/tri level sync generator. This (having to own a black gen) existed back in the linear days, it existed in the AVID days (when everyone was laying off to Digi Beta, and getting channel error conditions when not using genlock), and exists today with FCP and Adobe Premier systems. YOU MUST OWN A BLACK GENERATOR (or rent one). Anyone who says “oh this guy is an idiot, you don’t need one at all” is a moron, and does not belong in this business. Even if you don’t own a copy of FCP, you need to own (or have access to ) a black generator. It should be distributed at birth (if your parents know that you will go into the professional video business). As CMX, AVID, FCP, Adobe, Vegas, Edius and others fade into the sunset over time, you will STILL need your black generator, and now that we work in 23.98, you ABSOLUTELY need a tri level sync gen.If you can’t afford one, stop eating for 2 weeks, and buy one. You are too fat anyway. And since you are having this emergency on a Sunday, why did you post in the FCP forum, when Creative Cow has a SRW forum ????
https://forums.creativecow.net/sony_SRW5500There is no excuse Aaron.

August 23, 2009 at 10:30 pmBob, I know it’s your schtick to be aggressively preachy, but honestly?
I own a Gen 10 thank you very much. But I probably should stop eating for 2 weeks just for the heck of it.
I apologize for not realizing there’s an SRW forum.

August 24, 2009 at 6:29 amHaving spent the day trying to ignore it:
You’re a leader in several of the forums and you certainly do know what you’re talking about. But as a “leader” you’re not terribly exemplary. I know this is not the first time you’ve laid into someone who didn’t have your engineering experience. Thank you for lambasting a fellow member of the Cow when he was in a jam. Having been a member for several years I would have hoped for a better reception or more constructive feedback.

August 24, 2009 at 3:35 pmGeeez Aaron, lighten up.
You got off easy! On the Zelin “rant scale” that post barely even registered a “1”.
I happen to agree with Bob that if you’re doing this stuff for a living you should know these things. You got the answer you needed from Bob (Sync generator). Just ‘cuz your ego was bruised don’t shoot the messenger.

August 24, 2009 at 4:50 pmHi.
As you sayed you have only SDI connected but no sync?
It should work just like that if you connect your sync gen and capture card and tape machine. Just make sure gen and tape have the same frame rate (setting).
This is no brainer.

August 25, 2009 at 12:17 amBob got me good a few months ago…..it actually made the day more fun!
Getting any response from Bob is a good thing because you’ll have the answer.
