  • Light Wrap in Final Cut?

Posted by Geoffrey Plitt on August 11, 2009 at 12:51 am

I’d like to do a Light-wrap effect in Final Cut without going to Shake, AE or other compositing hosts. I’ve already got a good key and tracked background, so I’d just like to find a plugin or technique to do some gentle light-wrap, blending my background into the foreground edges.

I don’t have the budget to get AE, BCC, Primate, DVMatte, Keylight, or any of those other good systems, and I’m already 90% done with my key with other tools, so I just need Light wrap. Hoping to find a free solution, but I have $100 to spend if there’s a cheap plugin that does this.

    1) Anyone know of a way to get existing FCP plugins to do this? It shouldn’t be hard, I basically just need a NEGATIVE mask-feather, so that it feathers INTO the foreground.

    2) Anyone know of a free or cheap (<$100) plugin I can use to do this? I've been looking at blurs and matte tools, compositing modes, and I'll bet there's an easy way to do this without installing Shake, BCC, Primate, DVMatte, Keylight, or any of the RIGHT tools. Just curious if anyone can think of a way to do it within these constraints I have-- thanks! Please don't add noise to this thread by convincing me to use Shake, AE, or the other tools, I've used them plenty, but we have our own reasons for keeping this all in FCP. Thanks! -Geoff

I have Key Correct Pro, its a great product and works in both AE and Final Cut. Definitely worth the money.

Anything (almost) can be done in fcp with enough patience and ingenuity:

So what is lightwrap? Keying a blurred version of the background over the edges of the foreground with falloff into the foreground, using an apropriate composite mode.

So how do we do it? (Assuming you use a filter in fcp to pull the key.)

    1. On the video track above your composite add a copy of the keyed foreground. (Just copy the clip you have keyed for your Composite. Set the display mode to matte.

    2. Add another copy of the keyed foreground to the next videotrack (above) and set this to display matte as well. Change composite mode of this clip to Subtract. On this clip you can now use the Edge control softening to add suitable falloff into the foreground matte.

    3. Nest the two clips. This nest is the matte for your edges.

    4. Add a copy of your background above the “matte nest”. Blur using whatever method and settings please you. Set composite mode to Travel Matte – luma. Now you have the blurred background composited over the edges of your composite with a falloff into the foreground.

    5. Nest the “matte nest” and the blurred background. Change the composite mode of this nest to your liking. Usually Lighten is good, but you can experiment with Screen or anything else.

    Done… (I hope…)

Yay! Exactly what I needed, and this also enhanced my limited understanding of composting and display modes. Thanks a ton Stephan.
