making notations in the timeline – markers
Coming from AVID…I regularly use markers to reference bad spots…or areas that need attention when I’m editing. It allows me to drop a marker down and give it information.
I’m using the marker function in FCP, but it’s lacking 2 things:
Reference stays with the timeline TC and not with the clips if I cut or splice.
The notations I can add to the markers are not easy to read…takes 2 keystrokes to get to them and it’s in a small dialog box.
Anyone using markers like this? Am I not using them correctly? Is there a better way to make notations in my timeline?

I would make the markers in the viewer before you pull the clips into the timeline. Then the markers are based on the original and not the timeline.

You can also move Markers forward in the timeline by placing the playhead just ahead of the marker you want to move and pressing:
Shift-`
thats the icon next to the number 1 under the escape key
Another thing I like is placing the playhead to the right of a marker and pressing:

FCP Markers do not act like Avid locators. BIG shame, and tough for us Avid guys to get used to. They will not move when you make changes to the sequence…period. You have to manually move them which really isn’t viable.
And you can add them to the clips and they will move, but not show up on the timeline nor Canvas.
Hope they address this soon.

Actually, they do show in the timeline. At least the version of FCP I’m using shows them. (FCP 6.0.6 on Tiger) You are right about the canvas though. I don’t know why they don’t show up there. Strange.

By timeline I mean on the timeline bar above all the tracks. Yes, they show up on the CLIPS in the timeline, but you can’t really find them that way, can you? We need them on the timeline bar and the Canvas, and to MOVE when you make changes, so you can track footage better.

markers in FCP are kinda useless. ok for a quick note, but no good to track footage over an edit

One big complaint I have is that the information you type into a marker can’t be seen anywhere unless you go into the marker dialog box. UNLESS you have a clip marker…that information shows up as an overlay lower 3rd in the viewer…isn’t that strange? Information typed into the marker shows up on the source viewer…but not the sequence side? It’s very strange and doesn’t make sense as to why they wouldn’t do the same with sequence markers.

I find that sequence markers show up in the canvas as well with the comment, if you have ‘Show overlays’ turned on in the canvas. What you can’t do is SEARCH the comments of markers as that content doesn’t show up in any of the columns, but if you know the name of the marker, that will pop up in a search as long as the clip in the bin is visible and the arrow twirled down (totally stupid). The markers in FCP definitely need an upgrade as the global marker search feature would be super handy.
You know you can use shift up and down to navigate to the next/previous marker very easily, right?
You can also move a marker backwards by typing in the starting time code (I know, still very clunky).
I would suggest sending feedback to Apple to update the markers. I’d love to see it.

I agree that it needs updated (what’s the deal with markers being a twirl down on the clip?? 🙂
