  Audio Sync Problems

  Hello all!

  Earlier today I exported an OMF from Final Cut Pro to mix in Digital Performer. After exporting the final mix from Digital Performer, I brought it back into Final Cut Pro. The audio gradually got more and more out of sync. I did a series of tests with different fps settings in Digital Performer, but the problem remained. I then tried exporting the audio to an AIFF (stereo mix) from FCP and bringing it directly back into the project, and the same problem occurred. It kept happening even when I exported the footage as an “audio only” quicktime movie using “current settings”.

  Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Below are the technical details of my system.

  FCP Sequence Preset:
  1440 x 1080 29.97 HDV 1080i60

  Footage Capture Settings:
  1440 x 1080 29.97 HDV 1080i60

  Camera Used:
  Sony V1U in HDV mode at 24p

  Computer Info:
  Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
  Digital Performer 6.0.2
  OSX 10.5.6
  2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel
  4GB 800MHz

  This seems to be reported a lot with FCP lately. I work in PAL and have never had this issue with round tripping between FCP, Fairlight and other systems, so I suspect it has something to do with 24 versus 23.98 interpretation within FCP

  If your sequence and Digital performer fps settings are identical, then there shouldn’t be drift. My guess is the drift is .1% so you could try making a final mix file from Digital Performer with a .1% slow down (or speed up depending on the way the drift happens) and reimport that into FCP. There is no pitch consequence with such a small percentage so just do it as a stretch/squeeze.
