    Hello!

I’m looking to upgrade my current Mac tower (G5, PowerPC). I’ve got a budget of about $5,000 and have come up with the following setup…

    8-core, 16GB Tower: $3,800
    3 1TB Seagate Barracuda SATA drives: 90×3=$270
    CalDigit RAID card: $645

That comes to $4,715. Is there anything else that you all would strongly recommend adding to that? Any major reason to upgrade the graphics card?

I should mention I have a dual monitor setup that works fine as well as a Kona LHe card.

    Thanks very much!

    Apple Care is a MUST!

If you are going to be making money with this setup, you want a card specifically for Motion, the 4870 or 4780, whatever they’re calling it now.
    You want CS4.
You want to replace the chair at your editing desk.

    Haha…very nice.

Don’t use Motion very often. Tend to use After Effects for all my motion graphics needs.

Chair is sufficient but I wouldn’t be opposed to an upgrade!

don’t get the ram from Apple, get it from a 3rd party for a lot less

why are you getting the raid card ? you can stripe a raid with the internal drives & OS X. raid card only makes sense to connect to external storage

and that kona card probably won’t work because unless your G5 was the last generation, they have PCI-X slots, not PCIe. in that case, the kona card is a boat anchor.

in which case you need to look at some sort of video I/O, and I think the better choice is the matrox hardware once you look at price / performance / options in product line including the h264 encode acceleration.
