  Curious about AVI 720×480 and pixel aspect ratio

  Hi,

  I’m just curious, is it possible to make a 720×480 AVI with DV pixel aspect ratio? When I export a 4:3 720×480 clip as an AVI and open it with Quicktime the format is DV, 720×480 but the actual size is 640×480. I take this to mean that the AVI is using square pixels to display properly on a computer monitor.

  Is there any way to even make an AVI with actual size of 720×480 and would someone ever need to?

  720×480 D1 is a “semi” anamorphic format.

  the pixel ratio is 0.9

  viewed at its proper display ratio of 1.0 its 640×480

  720×480 D1 Widescreen is “full” anamorphic. (exactly like anamorphic dvds for example)

  the pixel ratio is 1.2

  viewed at its proper display ratio of 1.0 its 854×480 (letterboxed on 4:3 or filled on 16:9)

  Dave, it is also 640×480 but with square pixels aspect ratio.

  By the way, everything looks right. Our client just asked for 720×480 and I’m a little worried if they open it up in QT and see that “actual size” as 640×480 they won’t understand that the frame size is just adjusting for the display ratio. But it sounds like that’s what I’ll have to say.
