importing images from photoshop into FCP and losing quality
Hi there,
I am trying to overlay some images created in photoshop over footage in FCP (cutesy text for a home movie.) The source footage is 30fps (not 29.97), and the sequence is also at 30fps. The still images, however, are 29.97. When I export, the video looks beautiful but the text looks strange – pixelated around the edges, like there is some sort of interlacing problem? I’m sorry I do not know the correct terminology for this. I have tried changing the frame rate for imported images, but in all of the settings and preferences I can not find how to do this. I have tried to change the settings for just those images but can not find how to change them. Can anyone help?

Quick update: I tried importing one psd file into After Effects and exporting as a quick time at 30fps, but this looks exactly the same as the still images once imported into final cut. Hmm.

What kind of footage are you editing?
Which codec have you set for your sequence?[Kate Perkins] “The still images, however, are 29.97. “
Still images have no time-base. No “fps”. They will be played with the time-base of your sequence.

The footage is from my digital camera, a Canon SD 900 IS. It’s H.264 at 30fps. The sequence is “DV/DVC PRO – NTSC”. The item properties box for the still images have 29.97 as the video rate, but the clips are at 30. This is the only inconsistency I can find to explain the degradation of those still clips.

Hi Kate,
The problem are not the stills, but the sequence codec.
Change it to ProRess and set the Field order of your sequence as NONE.
Render a little and have a look.
