replacing hard drive on MBP
Posted by Trevor Ward on May 29, 2009 at 1:33 pmNot sure this is most appropriate forum, but I’m a FCP user and here goes:
I have a 2 year old MBP with only a 100GB hard drive. How easy is it to install a new, larger hard drive? I’d kind of like more space for capture files. And yes, I already have several external drives including a RAID. But sometimes it’s nice to have everything in one aluminum box.
I’d want to transfer everything to my new hard drive, i.e. downloaded software, settings, mail, documents, etc.

You get POOR performance when you capture and edit from the same drive as your OS and applications. The internal drive already has plenty to do, running the OS applications etc, piling video on top of that is just not a good idea.
I recommend getting a small bus powered drive that can be attached. With a bus powdered drive you don’t have to plug it into a wall for power.
As for how difficult it is, well for some people it is not difficult at all, and for others it may be kinda difficult it all depends on your technical knowledge and experience.
Keep in mind that doing it yourself technically voids any warranty you may have, so I always recommend having it done by a certified Apple Technician.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity! -

May 29, 2009 at 2:27 pmYou be the judge if you can install a hard drive.
https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/I did it myself so I could have more space to ad more apps.

May 29, 2009 at 3:27 pmI put a new 200 gig drive in my MBP (pre-unibody model) using the same video. It went very easy except for temporarily losing one small screw when it attached itself to the magnet in the MBP latch. 🙂

May 29, 2009 at 3:38 pmThe video is great and all, but it’s kind of nice to have the option to print something out.
I too replaced the HD in my MacBook Pro and replaced it with a larger, faster (7200 RPM + more cache), Seagate drive from Best Buy. I just printed the instructions and off I went…
This website has instructions for pretty much everything, and the nice thing is they are model specific.
One other piece of advice I have is to make sure you keep all of the screws separated. I basically placed them on a piece of paper and noted what step it was that was associated to their removal (I hope that makes sense).

Good luck!!

May 29, 2009 at 4:12 pmI just installed a 500Gb Seagate into my 2.0Ghz MBP. Make sure you have the two tools required… and then just follow the online instructions. The process was not bad at all.

May 30, 2009 at 3:06 amI installed a new 320 gig drive in my Macbook plus replaced the Optical drive which had also failed due to a child inserting some foreign object!
I took my original 80 gig drive and put it into a small USB enclosure and use it as a transfer drive.
