burn a SD DVD out of HD footage
Does anybody know what’s the best way to burn a SD single layer DVD out of HD footage (1920×1080)? I just burned a SD DVD with DVD studio pro, but the quality looks worse than DV. Do I need to have any kind of card in my computer?

Nope. Export a self contained file, take that into Compressor and use the BEST settings for DVD, that match your timing, then take the result into DVD SP.

I matched the timing of the Q-T with the compressor bit rate, then I took the MPEG2 to DVD SP. DVD SP failed, and gave me error message says: video bitrate is high. Also, the quality looks worse than DV footage.

SO you took the QT file into Compressor, just dragged the DVD setting that you wanted onto that…DIDN’T CHANGE ANYTHING…clicked SUBMIT, then took the final result into DVD SP and it didn’t work?
I do this all the time. With ProRes footage. Looks fine. Not on a HDTV, it looks like crap there. But that is because it is taking an SD DVD and playing it on a NON-upconverting DVD player to an HDTV. Icky.

I choose best dvd, two pass VBR and change the bit rate to the highest in the compressor. Then I took the MPEG2 to DVD SP.
So, I can’t do anything about the quality unless I burn the footage on a bluray, right.Ari

Don’t do that. Do not change anything. You are changing the bit rate to something DVD players cannot play. Choose the preset, and leave it alone.

I´m not professional and don´t have AJA, Kona, Matrox to do downconversion, so I used these recommendations with very good quality: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/hdv_timeline_to_sd_dvd.html
Now I use other options: the fast way – timeline to DV/DVCPRO NTSC (if your footage is NTSC, if not – DV PAL, but I didn´t check it) with QT conversion and then Compressor DVD MPEG 2 highest quality; the other way – timeline to 1080HDV30p with QT conversion (progressive) and then – Compressor DVD MPEG 2 highest quality – with slightly better result.
