  • Question about sequence’s “uniqueness”

Posted by Diego Massanti on May 19, 2009 at 10:35 am

Hi there, i have a certainly basic question i think….

When i create a sequence that i use several times inside a big project (for example the animated background for a lower third) why is that if I at a later time modify the “master” sequence for it, the ones inside my main timeline seems to ignore the changes ???

Are sequences in FCP independent ?
Could anybody clarify on this issue ?

    Thanks in advance, Diego.

    Cheers.

[Diego Massanti] “Are sequences in FCP independent ? “

Yep. For the most part. When you Nest a Sequence you should be able to change the master sequence and it will change everything else you’ve included that Nest in. But it doesn’t always work.

    ” But it doesn’t always work…”

Well… it is never working for me, this is really frustrating… what kind of editing behavior is this ?
I am certainly new to FCP (come from avid), and honestly im speechless about this issue…

    Cheers.

    Diego

FCP is not avid, so be prepared for it to act differently

FWIW nested sequences seem to remain linked to each master sequence individually, such that if I have a Nested seq in Show Version 1, adn make a copy of that show, i have now made a copy of Nested sequence 1 as well. so by double clicking my nest in Show Version 1, I WONT be accessing the nest with the same name in the copy of show version 1

    waht does this all mean?

If you want to make a nest and have changes to that nest appear in multiple iterations, open the nest from the browser, export it as a native quicktime, and cut it into your show in place of the nested sequence.

If you change the nested sequence, re export it, and replace the older export at the Finder level, it will change all the copies of that export in your project

    hope this helps

It might be easier to do create those kinds of elements in Motion so updates would happen “instantly” after you save changes to your Motion project.

Yah well i totally understand your idea here, but im kinda confused now, i never expected a professional level editing app to behave like this, i guess im going to perform some more investigation before blaming more :p

    Diego,

There are two ways to duplicate sequences in FCP. Copy and paste or use the Duplicate function. The first way retains a parent/child relationship and the second makes an entirely independent sequence.

    Have a wonderful day.

Actually this is similar to the way it works in Avid. If you duplicate a sequence on Avid it becomes independent, and if you edit a sequnce into another sequence and then change the original it does not update either.

FCP update ONLY!! sequences the you didn’t change in any parameter.
So, if you trim the In/Out points
or if there is clip that prevent the sequence from change duration
it will be no change and you nested sequence will be “Version” of the original sequence.
